HAREC has six research sub-units: cereal breeding, potato varietal development, horticultural production and quality, integrated pest management, enhancement of potat

o nutrition, and riparian and stream ecology; and two extension units: plant pathology/diagnostics and commodity-crops production and groundwater quality. The most recent addition to the Center has been the addition of a molecular biologist with specific interest in helping to increase nutrients essential for human health in existing crops grown in this area.

2026 HAREC Wheat Field Day – Thank You!

With perfect weather, we hosted our annual Field Day yesterday, bringing together growers, industry partners, students, and community members to experience HAREC’s research firsthand.
This year’s program featured eight presentations from Syngenta, Limagrain Cereal Seeds, the Oregon Wheat Commission, USDA‑ARS, the OSU Department of Crop and Soil Science, CBARC, and HAREC.

We were also honored to welcome several leaders from Corvallis: Staci Simonich, Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences; Manoj Shukla, Head of the Crop and Soil Science Department; Jackie Thorsness, CAS Chief Operating Officer; and Ben Davis, CAS Director of Marketing and Communications.

We sincerely appreciate the time, effort, and collaboration of our staff, presenters, partners, and attendees. A special thank‑you goes to our event sponsor, Nutrien Ag Solutions, for their generous support.

We look forward to seeing you at our next event!

Last night, Aaron De la Paz officially reached a major milestone—graduating from Hermiston High School and receiving his diploma!

Aaron has been a familiar face at HAREC since the summer of 2023, when he joined our Agronomy program under the guidance of Ruijin Qin.

This fall, Aaron will be heading to Southwestern Oregon Community College, where he’ll pursue his Associate Degree and take the field as a member of the Lakers men’s soccer team ⚽️

We are incredibly proud to have been part of his journey. Wishing you all the best, Aaron—we can’t wait to see all that you accomplish. Don’t forget to come back and visit!

COAREC Faculty Visited HAREC!

Yesterday, we were pleased to host colleagues from the Central Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station (COAREC). Dr. Steve Culman, COAREC Director, along with Drs. Floyid Nicolas and Gordon Jones met with HAREC faculty and staff and toured our station facilities.

We had productive discussions about current research and extension efforts at both stations and explored opportunities for synergy and future collaboration.

It was a great visit. Thank you for coming to HAREC!

This week, our Plant Pathologist, Ken Frost, took a break from his busy schedule to visit with students at Hermiston High School. He spoke with them about summer opportunities at the station and what it’s like to work in our labs.

We’re excited about the possibility of welcoming a few Bulldogs this summer—don’t miss your chance to join us and apply today at jobs.oregonstate.edu 🧪🐾

What an inspiring day at HAREC during our first Research and Collaboration Ignite Session with State Agencies!

Today we had an enlightening and energizing meeting with our colleagues from the Oregon Water Resources Department, the Department of Environmental Quality, and the Oregon Department of Agriculture. It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and continue building a shared vision for the future of water and environmental stewardship in Oregon.

Grateful for the collaboration and excited for what comes next!
