At approximately 12:34 p.m., Umatilla County Fire District #1 was dispatched to a reported structure fire at the North Slope Mobile Home Park in Stanfield.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-story manufactured home fully involved with heavy smoke and flames showing. Crews quickly initiated an aggressive fire attack and, with assistance from Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District, were able to contain the fire and prevent further spread.

The home sustained significant damage, and one vehicle parked nearby was also damaged in the blaze. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

With such a large response area and limited personnel, UCFD #1 relies on mutual aid partners to travel into the District to provide additional personnel and equipment during significant emergencies. Having the right resources at the right time is critical to protecting lives and property throughout our communities.

When you hear "fire prevention," what comes to mind?

School presentations? Fire station tours? Safety pamphlets?

According to Division Chief and Fire Marshal Scott Goff with Umatilla County Fire District #1, the most important prevention work often happens where the public never sees it.

From making sure fire trucks can access new developments to ensuring buildings have the right safety systems in place, prevention is the invisible work that helps protect entire communities before an emergency happens.

After nearly 40 years in the fire service, Goff shares how data, planning, and collaboration are helping create safer communities.

This screenshot captures a moment from yesterday when Umatilla County Fire District #1 was managing seven emergency calls for service within an hour.

These incidents ranged from reports of stomach pain and difficulty breathing to loss of consciousness and serious falls, all occurring across multiple communities at nearly the same time.

The units identified as M20, M21, M22, and M26 are UCFD #1 ambulances. As call volume increased, additional resources from our mutual aid partners, including Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District, Pendleton Fire & Emergency Services, Boardman Fire Rescue District, & Echo Fire Department, needed to travel into our district to help cover emergency calls while UCFD #1 units were already committed to other incidents.

This is why the 16 FEMA SAFER-funded firefighters and paramedics are so important. Once the final eight recruits complete academy and gain field training experience, the District will have the ability to staff three fire stations - Station 21 on South 1st Street, Station 22 on Punkin Center Road, and Station 23 on Westland Road - with firefighter/paramedic & EMT coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This additional staffing increases ambulance availability, improves the District's ability to manage multiple emergencies occurring at the same time, and helps ensure resources are available when & where community members need them most.

To most people, an emergency might seem like a one-time event, but days like yesterday are happening more often. 70% of UCFD #1's calls come in while another emergency is already happening, requiring our crews to balance several incidents at once across the area.

Having enough well-trained firefighter/paramedic crews is key to making sure we can respond quickly when you need us. Even when one ambulance is busy, the next emergency can still happen at any moment.

At approximately 4:08 p.m., UCFD #1 was dispatched to a reported fire in the 1300 block of E. Punkin Center Road in Hermiston.

Upon arrival, crews discovered an active fire involving an RV that had begun spreading into the surrounding brush.

The fire threatened multiple vehicles, outbuildings, and other materials located nearby. Crews quickly knocked down the RV fire and stopped the forward progression of the brush fire. No major additional structures were damaged.

One person was evaluated, treated, and released at the scene for a non-life-threatening illness.

The fire is believed to have been caused by sparks generated during mechanical work.

UCFD #1 would like to thank Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District and the Echo Fire Department for their quick mutual aid response and assistance.

A big thank you to Desert View Elementary School for welcoming our crews for a fire engine tour today! πŸ”₯

First graders got a firsthand look at firefighter turnout gear, learned how to stay safe during a fire emergency, and even had the opportunity to sit inside the back of the fire engine.

As the school year comes to a close and summer approaches, we want to thank all of the local students, teachers, and school staff who welcomed our crews into your classrooms throughout the 2025–26 school year.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our community and help teach the next generation about fire safety! ❀️‍πŸ”₯
