AIR QUALITY ALERT

Air quality in DeSoto County is currently Code Orange due to elevated ozone levels. Another Air Quality Action Day is forecast for Sunday.

Code Orange means the air may be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Children, older adults, people with respiratory conditions and those spending extended time outdoors should limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially during the afternoon and early evening.

All open burning is prohibited in DeSoto County.

TRAFFIC NOTICE: The street on the west side of the DeSoto County Courthouse in Hernando will be closed today, August 28, from 7:30 a.m. until approximately 11:00 a.m. for a generator installation.

Please use caution in the area and plan to use an alternate route.

Construction on DeSoto County’s new Crisis Center continues to move forward in Hernando. The walls are up, the windows are in, and the outside masonry is nearly complete.

As DeSoto County grows, the need for services and facilities grows with it. The Board of Supervisors works to plan for those needs. Sometimes that means building something new.

Other times, it means finding a new purpose for a facility the County already owns.

The 16 bed Crisis Center on Highway 51 in Hernando is a little of both.

The facility is expected to begin serving the community early next year and will help address a long standing need in DeSoto County.

Today, residents experiencing a serious mental health crisis may have to be transported outside the county for stabilization services. Those trips can take deputies considerable distances from DeSoto County and away from other law enforcement duties. In some cases, people going through the civil commitment process may also spend time in the County jail while waiting for appropriate placement.

The new Crisis Center will provide a more appropriate local option, helping reduce long distance transports, lessen the use of the jail for people in mental health crisis, and allow more residents to receive care closer to family and support systems.

The building itself is also part of the story.

It previously housed the DeSoto County Extension Service, 4-H, Master Gardeners, Soil and Water Conservation and related programs. Those programs had outgrown the facility and were moved to the new Agri Education Center, giving them room to grow.

That growth is already happening. In 2022, the Extension Service reported 918 engaged 4-H members. This summer, Extension reported reaching 8,015 youth through 4-H programming!

Moving the Extension Service and its partner programs to the Agri Education Center gave those programs room to grow. It also opened the former Extension property for a new purpose.

Now, a building that one group had outgrown is being transformed to meet another important need in our community.
