Beginning April 13, the Town of Herndon will suspend curbside pick-up of yard waste. This change allows crews to continue to prioritize and safely collect residential refuse and recycling. Residents are encouraged to compost yard waste at home or wait to place it curbside until service returns to normal. Please note as well, due to social distancing requirements, crews are working on rotational schedules, which may cause some delays in normal collection times.

We appreciate your understanding. We are working to protect our workforce during the current public health emergency while ensuring that trash and recyclables are collected.

Residents can help provide safer working conditions for our workforce by following these best practices:
1. REDUCE THE WASTE YOU GENERATE- During this unprecedented time, residents should be mindful of the quantity of waste they generate, so as not to overwhelm the collection system. For example, this is not the best time to clean out the garage/do spring cleaning.
2. STOP SETTING OUT YARD WASTE AT THE CURB. Start grasscycling, backyard composting, and limit generation of yard waste if possible. Residents may take their Yard waste to the I-66 transfer station and I-95 landfill complex.
3. BAG ALL TRASH and REFUSE – Bagged trash limits exposure to potentially harmful materials, such as used tissue that could spread viruses and bacteria.
4. KEEP ALL RECYCLING CLEAN AND LOOSE – When recycling is loose in the bin, not in bags, it is easier to process. Removing food and liquid residue from recyclables minimizes the spread of viruses and bacteria. Only place plastic bottles and jugs, paper, cardboard, cartons and metal cans in the bin.
5. EMPTY ALL LIQUIDS – Liquids in bottles, cans, and other containers can carry viruses and bacteria and can splash onto collectors when trash and recyclables are emptied.
6. WIPE/DISINFECT CART HANDLES AND LIDS – The two main touch points on a cart for collectors are the lid and the handles. By wiping those areas down with disinfectant or soapy water, you minimize the danger of shared contact areas.
7. SEAL AND MARK ALL SHARPS/NEEDLES – Properly dispose of medical sharp objects such as syringes by placing them in a sealed, rigid plastic container. Seal the container with sturdy tape, clearly mark it as “Sharps,” and place in the trash.

The stay-at-home order issued by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam today is critical to help slow the spread of the coronavirus as cases continue to climb across the state with 225 confirmed cases in the Fairfax County Health District. Social distancing is the most effective method to limit the disease’s transmission.

The governor’s action, which currently remains in effect until June 10, means that residents should stay in homes with only a few exceptions for essential activities, including:

• Getting groceries or medicines.
• Caring for a sick family member or friend.
• Getting medical care for yourself .
• Going outside for exercise for yourself or pets (although not in groups larger than 10 people).
• Getting essential social or government services.
• Traveling to and from work or place of worship.

Do not go out unless you need to go out.

“To date, this has been a suggestion to Virginians,” said Northam. “Today it’s an order.”

To help protect county employees who provide critical solid waste services to the community, on Monday, March 30, Fairfax County will remove the Purple Glass Recycling Bin at the Town of Herndon Sterling Road location, for the duration of the pandemic. Residents will still be able to drop off glass at the two main county facilities: I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex. The county plans on rolling out this service out again once conditions return to normal.

03/26/2020

The town's Public Works crews are currently working on rotational schedules to help ensure social distancing. This may cause some delays in normal trash and recycling collection times. Please continue to follow all town ordinances regarding curbside collection to include placing trash in approved containers with the lid tightly closed. We thank you for your patience as we work through this together.

Executive Order from the Office of the Governor, Commonwealth of Virginia, relative to closure of schools and certain non-essential businesses:

As we continue responding to the #COVID19 outbreak, my highest priority is protecting the health and safety of all Virginians. This is an unprecedented situation, and it requires unprecedented action.

Here’s what that means for Virginians ⬇️

Today, I am ordering certain non-essential businesses to close for 30 days, banning gatherings of more than 10 people, and requiring restaurants to do carryout or delivery only. This starts Tuesday, March 24 at 11:59 PM.

I am also ordering all schools in Virginia to remain closed at least through the end of this academic year.

I know these changes will raise many questions and create new challenges—but I am also confident in our ability to be resilient and navigate these waters together.
