Herndon Police Department

CLARIFICATION: Virginia Governor Ralph Northam issued Executive Directive Eight on March 19, 2020, directing the Superintendent of the Virginia State Police to suspend the enforcement of Motor Vehicle Safety Inspections (MVSI). This ED DOES NOT apply to local municipalities within the Commonwealth. HPD gave its own discretionary period ("discretionary period" edited from the incorrect use of "grace period") at the beginning of the crisis, but we have resumed normal procedures for safety inspection enforcement.
Safety inspections stations throughout the Town of Herndon have remained open during the crisis, as transportation-related needs are deemed “essential.” If your vehicle’s MVSI is expired, it is best to get it handled at your earliest convenience.

Statement from Herndon Police Chief Maggie DeBoard:

Statement from Herndon Police Chief Maggie DeBoard:

Message From Chief Maggie DeBoard:

To our Herndon Community,

The incident in Minneapolis last week has left all of us at HPD deeply struggling about our profession. It was difficult to watch and is even more difficult for us to understand how an incident like this could have occurred. The actions that took the life of George Floyd showed a complete lack of humanity, one not previously witnessed in my 34-year career. We have worked so very hard to build trust, not only in our Herndon community, but throughout the country, only to see this tragic incident destroy years of work performed by dedicated, empathetic, and caring police officers.

What concerns me now, however, is the violent reactions we are seeing that are destroying our communities throughout the country, actions that are putting innocent citizens and dedicated public servants in grave danger. These communities need hope, not destruction, more loss of life, and loss of their livelihoods. This is not the path towards healing or problem solving. It only creates additional barriers and fear at a time when peace and clear minds are so needed.

Please know that all of us at HPD care deeply about our entire community, as well as the effect this incident has had on your relationship with us. We pray that the trust you have instilled in us over the past 8 years that I have been blessed to serve as your Chief, remains strong. It is only through honest and open dialogue, clear minds, and peaceful protest can we continue to make positive steps forward to ensure an incident of this nature never happens again.

Our hearts and prayers go out to George Floyd’s family and to all of those first responders working the front lines trying desperately to protect their communities and its citizens from further harm.
