Web development first piqued Bolor Bundgaa’s interest back in the late ‘90s when he was a college student in his native Mongolia. In fact, a job offer to work as a web designer in Beijing was so attractive that he left school just one month shy of graduating, to pursue a career in the then-nascent field. A few stops and starts later, Bolor returned to school and earned his master’s degree, but this time in the U.S. “I wanted to be in America, because America is booming, everything is fast-paced, it’s the best country for business,” he says.
Bolor found his niche, as a digital content creator, and his business location, tucked into the Sugar Oak Office Retreat on Carlisle Drive in Herndon. His company, PhotoXpedia, specializes in creation of videos, photos and graphics designed to build new or enhance existing brands. Essentially, says Bolor, he helps clients’ tell their stories. “I call it ‘mindful visuals’: what is the right lighting to tell the story? What should be in the background? What makes it unique? What is the purpose of the photo, or video, or graphic? I try to convey that, with each project.”
His Herndon location is close to his Fairfax home and allows him to drop his kids off at their schools en route to and from. He has taken advantage, too, of the Mason Enterprise Center in Herndon; last week, he attended a free Lunch & Learn there (on networking: “It’s so effective, if you do it right”) and has had free one-on-one consultations with GMU’s pros there. “It’s a good resource for a business my size,” he says.
Does your business have a need for compelling digital content? Check out photoxpedia.studio online, set up a meeting with Bolor and support this new Herndon business!

It's that most wonderful time of the year! DPW crews are busy decking halls and trimming trees and all kinds of holiday cheer. (Safety first: no wreaths on Elden Street power poles, as a recent risk assessment indicates the town has neither the equipment nor training to work close to power lines.) Take a drive or stroll through downtown, admire the greenery, and plan to join your neighbors and friends for the Town Square tree lighting and sing-along, 5pm this Saturday!

So, do you remember last spring, when the town finished a project to restore the Sugarland Run Stream to make it more sustainable? Since then, the town has planted:
108 shrubs
324 floodplain trees
300 live stake trees
900 perennial and grass plugs; and
thousands of native seeds.
Not done yet, 3,000 live stakes will be planted in the coming weeks.
The stream area is adjacent to the W&OD Trail, behind the police station. Come check it out!

This season of gratitude is a good time to feature today’s , Cory Laws. As the town’s Housing/Neighborhood Improvements Coordinator, Cory’s role is to help make lives better for low to moderate-income residents of Herndon. “This job suits me well,” he says. “I like helping people.”
The Neighborhood Improvement Program in Herndon is funded largely via a federal grant administered by Fairfax County and is designed to help residents with home maintenance and repairs. From painting and caulking to gutter and siding repairs to roof repairs and more, Cory stands ready to assist qualified homeowners. “I help them find resources, I may line up volunteers to help, I may help out myself,” he says. “I work with the homeowner to get their needs met.” Cory also reaches out to businesses, such as Home Depot, which has donated materials for projects, and to other government agencies that may provide resources. “We just figure it out and get it done,” he says.
A Herndon resident since 2004, Cory also has a healthy network of friends and neighbors, from whom he can solicit help and ideas. In fact, Cory and his wife Carolyn are so embedded into the community that their 2017 wedding had a “Herndon theme”: dinner at Jimmy’s for family and guests the night before, breakfast at Virginia’s Kitchen on the day of, ceremony at Arts Herndon, and a day-after breakfast at Amphora. “We even had the Mayor, Lisa Merkel, marry us!”
For more information on the town’s Neighborhood Improvement Program, visit Herndon-va.gov and search for “Neighborhood Improvement.” Or shoot Cory an email ([email protected]) and find out how he might help you. After all, that’s his job - and his passion.

As the son of a blues harmonica musician, Garin Pappas, owner of Herndon’s Right On! Records, comes by his love of music honestly. “My dad had all the classics – Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Cream,” he recounts. “I started my own collection at a pretty early age.” A stint working at a record shop in his hometown of Fairfax further inspired him and ultimately led to the opening in 2016 of Right On! Records at 731 Elden Street, tucked onto the second floor of the commercial building at the corner of Elden and Spring streets.
The store’s inventory, currently at approximately 5,000-plus vinyl records, reflects Garin’s own taste as well as his deep knowledge of music. From Miles Davis to Fleetwood Mac, from the Beatles to Blondie, you’ll find all kinds of vintage records, although Garin does include newer titles by local and/or independent artists. His girlfriend, Caroline Weinroth -whose band, Cinema Hearts, is both local and indie – says that “I’ve really learned from Garin that there’s so much value to vintage music. There are some very cool stories that come from having these original records, and some very interesting music that you might only find in a record store.” She credits Garin with exposing her to a lot of new music; “he’s been digging into this for decades, he’s an expert.”
Garin says Herndon, with its proximity to both Loudoun and Fairfax counties, is just the right location for Right On! Records. He remembers coming with his parents as a kid to Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern for lunch, then browsing at Roaches in the Attic nearby. “I actually remember finding records for my collection there!” he says.
Right On! Records is currently open Thursdays through Sundays, although those hours will likely expand for pre-holiday shopping. Know someone who'd love a vintage copy of Frampton Comes Alive, or maybe Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, or -well, just about any vintage classic under the tree this year? Stop in for a browse or check them out at Right On Records

Sally Fares, the Town of Herndon’s senior accountant and the subject of this week’s , calls herself a “third culture kid.” “That’s a name for someone who was born in one place, raised somewhere else, and parents are from somewhere else,” she says. Sally’s mom grew up in Virginia, her dad in Canada, and she spent most of her childhood in Saudi Arabia -- “A real melting pot!”
All of this exposure to various cultures inspired her first career dream: to become a chef. “I love to cook, all kinds of dishes,” she says. In college, though, she found the nutritional science requirements were not to her taste (pun alert). So she changed her major to accounting. She describes her chosen profession as “like solving puzzles.” There are pieces that need to fit together, she says, to solve whatever accounting issue there might be. “There’s always something that needs to be figured out, there’s always something to solve,” she says. Sally joined the town’s Finance Department earlier this year, at a time when the department was onboarding a lot of new staff. “I started at a time when the department was very focused on team-building and protecting this new culture that was being built,” she recounts. “The timing was perfect for me.”
And her chef dreams? Well, she may not be cooking professionally, but she does spend a lot of time in the kitchen. “I’m glad I don’t do it for a living,” she says. “I really like my profession, and cooking just gets to be a fun hobby on the side.” In particular, she loves to bake – and is revving up for her family’s Thanksgiving gathering, which can top out at 50-plus people. “I’ll make about a dozen pies,” she says. “Pecan, apple, pumpkin – I’ll make a few of each.” In past years, leftover pies were then donated to a local food kitchen. “I love sharing good food, it’s a way to connect,” she says.
