Say hello Carlos Nogueras-Ortiz!

Carlos and his Fiancée (Francheska) are both Molecular Biologists on GAP’s NIH Team supporting the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Carlos’s current work focuses on studying small particles released by cells that make up the brain called extracellular vesicles. Extracellular vesicles are known to play a role in Alzheimer’s disease and similar disorders, and hence, studying them may help in developing strategies to treat and diagnose these types of mental illnesses. Prior to working as a Molecular Biologist, Carlos obtained his PhD from the University of Puerto Rico in 2015 working on the identification and characterization of novel protein level changes as well as identification of blood-borne biomarkers in diseases causing neuronal death due to the malfunction of the protein tau. Then, Carlos worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the National Institute on Aging studying the role of extracellular vesicles in pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease and other neuroinflammatory disorders.

Some Fun Facts about Carlos –

What is one interesting fact about yourself?

I dedicated many years to a music career as a Latin Urban Singer, releasing songs and music videos in genres of Reggaeton, Hip Hop, as well as Puerto Rican Salsa and Plena.

What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

My Fiancée (Francheska) and I belonged to a dog rescue group in Puerto Rico, in which we rescued abandoned dogs from the streets and took care of them until their condition improved and then would send them to the US for adoption. We kept 4 of these dogs and moved to Maryland with them.

Thank you, Carlos for being a part of the NIH Team! We appreciate all of your hard work and look forward to all of the great work you will continue to do!

Meet Francheska Delgado-Peraza!

Francheska and her fiancé (Carlos) are both Molecular Biologists on GAP’s NIH Team supporting the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Her current work demonstrates strong correlations of Alzheimer’s disease pathogenic proteins in extracellular vesicles and brain tissues suggesting that extracellular vesicles may be used to precisely characterize individual patients for multiple pathologies, contributing to the development of Precision Medicine. These findings validate the use of circulating extracellular vesicles as liquid biopsy biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease. Her research focuses on interrogating the molecular cargo of extracellular vesicles as they may offer a window into the brain and help us identify novel therapeutic targets and reveal critical times for therapeutic intervention in Alzheimer’s disease and potentially in other brain pathologies.

Some fun facts about Francheska –

What is one interesting fact about yourself?:

I have 2 middle names: Mariet and Renee; and my last names are hyphenated to avoid confusion because they are actually 2, as it is Puerto Rico’s tradition to carry your mother’s last name as well, so my current actual full name is Francheska Mariet Renee Delgado Peraza. Furthermore, is also our tradition that at marriage, you don’t only take your husband’s last name (which are 2 if he is Puerto Rican, which is the case as my fiancé is), you add it to yours using the preposition “Of”, which in Spanish is ”De”, so soon I will officially have 3 names and 4 last names, my full name becoming: Francheska Mariet Renee Delgado Peraza De Nogueras Ortiz.

What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?:

My Fiancé (Carlos) and I belonged to a dog rescue group in Puerto Rico, in which we rescued abandoned dogs from the streets and took care of them until their condition improved and then would send them to the US for adoption. We kept 4 of these dogs and moved to Maryland with them.

Meet Dr. Christopher Alexander!

Dr. Alexander is an Associate Scientific Director in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Office of the Scientific Director (OSD) within the Division of Intramural Research (DIR). As an Associate Scientific Director, Dr. Alexander oversees the general administration and larger programmatic operations of the DIR with a diverse portfolio ranging from various scientific review processes to the tenure process. Before joining GAP, he was a Molecular and Cellular Neurobiologist for over a decade, in the lab of Dr. John Hammer at the NHLBI.

Some fun facts about Dr. Alexander –

What is one interesting fact about yourself?:

Rather than becoming a biologist, I almost joined the British Ministry of Intelligence.

What is your favorite thing about GAP Solutions?:

My favorite thing about GAP solutions is the sense of community, while seamlessly integrated into the operations of the NHLBI. It feels that there is real interest to the work that we do and not just another ‘government contract’.

What made you go into the field of work that you’re currently in?:

I have always had a love for Biology and that theme is still strong in my current position. There were significant restrictions of being physically present at the NIH at the peak of the pandemic which made it almost impossible to carry out research. During my time outside the lab, I took on a lot of the administrative duties for the lab and found that not only did I enjoy it, but it also played to my strengths. That is why I decided to pursue a career in science administration ultimately leading me to the OSD.

We’re happy to have you a part of our NHLBI team, Dr. Alexander! We look forward to seeing more of the great work you are doing!
