What if I can't pay my important bills?

For those living paycheck to paycheck, it may be impossible to pay all of your critical bills, such as rent, mortgage, and car loan. If you find yourself short on cash, get out in front of the situation.

1. Call your landlord or lender. In some cases, they're being more lenient right now, giving extensions or waiving late payments.

2. Utilities across the country are taking steps to prevent hardships during this unprecedented crisis. These include: waiving late fees, preventing shut-offs, setting up deferred payment plans, and making emergency funds available to low-income households. This information should be posted on the utility’s website.

3. Credit cards: The recent rate cut by the Federal Reserve will result in slightly lower credit card interest rates, but the drop won’t be big enough to make any significant difference for most people. Many credit card companies have announced programs to help their cardholders. You may be able to arrange a temporary credit limit increase, a temporary interest rate reduction or forbearance – you can miss a payment without a late penalty, but the interest still accrues.

For example, Apple card sent an email to cardholders telling them they can enroll in its Customer Assistance Program, “which will allow you to skip your March payment without incurring interest charges,” the company confirmed to NBC News BETTER.

American Express encourages cardholders to call them. The company's financial hardship assistance may include “waiving late fees, return check fees, and interest charges.”

Capital One allows customers facing hardships to skip payments without accruing interest, according to The New York Times.

4. Sign up for a 0 percent balance transfer credit card that will help your cash flow in the near-term and save you money in the long run. With some of these cards, you can stop the interest clock for a year or more:

www.CreditCards.com has a list of balance transfer cards with no transfer fee.

5. If you have cash back rewards, now may be the time to cash in those rewards to pay some critical bills.

6. Student Loans: Trump announced that interest on federal students loans is now waived until the national emergency has ended. But details about this implementation are still sketchy, according to Mark Kantrowitz, publisher and vice president of research at Savingforcollege.com. Kantrowitz encourages looking at financial relief options such as: a) an economic hardship deferment b)forbearance c) income-driven repayment plans d) contact your lender and ask about options for grace periods, lower interest rates or interest waivers

7. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) is a nationwide nonprofit that provides financial counseling, advice on budgeting, and repaying debt. The initial counseling session is free. You can find a nonprofit credit counselor in your area on the NFCC website, or by calling (800) 388-2227.

Find the best credit cards by comparing a variety of offers for balance transfers, rewards, low interest, and more. Apply online at CreditCards.com.
