EMS Week 2026 | EMS Remembrance Day

Today, on EMS Remembrance Day, we pause to honor the EMS providers who gave everything in service to others.
For our region, this day carries a particularly heavy weight as we remember the Guthrie Air medical helicopter crew who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.

Their dedication, courage, and commitment to bringing critical care to those in need will never be forgotten. They embodied the very best of what it means to serve — answering the call no matter the hour, the weather, or the risk.

May we never forget their sacrifice.

To our H.O.P.S. EMS volunteers, thank you for your dedication, compassion, and professionalism. You make a difference on every call, and our community is safer because of you.

💙 We appreciate you — today and every day.

⛑️EMS Week | Save-A-Life Day ⛑️

Today's theme is around community training and action to help save a life. A prepared community is a safer community. Whether it's through donating blood or taking a CPR or Stop the Bleed class. All are steps for a community to take to save a life.

In 2025, we trained over 100 community members in CPR or Stop the Bleed. And we will break that number in 2026. If you would like training for your organization or group, please reach out to us to schedule it. We are happy to help!

🧸 EMS Week 2026 | EMS for Children Day 🧸

Pediatric patients present a unique set of issues, equipment, and training. For the last few years, HOPS has been participating in the Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project, adding new pediatric equipment to our ambulances and incorporating pediatric emergency training into our training schedule.

🦺 EMS Week 2026 | Safety Day 🦺

Today is Safety Day as part of EMS week. We want to highlight 2 safety items. First is roadside safety. 40 to 45% of EMS line-of-duty deaths involve traffic incidents. Every emergency scene on the roadway is someone’s family member trying to save a life. EMS providers work just feet away from moving traffic, often in dangerous conditions and at all hours of the day and night. One distracted or speeding driver can turn an emergency response into another tragedy. We ask our community to follow Move Over laws, slow down, stay alert, and give responders the space they need to work safely. A few extra seconds of caution can protect the lives of EMS crews, firefighters, law enforcement officers, tow operators, patients, and everyone else on the roadway. Keeping responders safe is a shared responsibility.

Second, we want to highlight a major issue we find in our community - driveway/house markers! In rural communities, clearly visible driveway markers can make a critical difference during an emergency. EMS, fire, and law enforcement responders often respond at night, during severe weather, or in areas where homes are difficult to locate quickly. A properly marked driveway helps emergency crews find the correct address faster, reducing delays when every second matters. Reflective, easy-to-read address markers placed where they are visible from the roadway can improve response times and help ensure responders reach you, your family, or your neighbors as quickly and safely as possible. Something as simple as a visible address sign can save valuable time in an emergency.

As part of EMS Week, today is EMS Education Day.

Our volunteers spend countless hours training and sharpening their skills to provide the highest level of care possible to our community. From our EMSVOs (drivers) to our EMRs and EMTs, every member completes the continuing education required to maintain certification through the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Currently, becoming an EMT requires more than 250 hours of training, along with 24 hours of continuing education every three years to maintain certification. Many of our EMTs far exceed those requirements each year.

We are also fortunate to have two EMS instructors on our crew who provide monthly in-house training. EMS has evolved tremendously over the past 50 years — from simply transporting patients quickly to the hospital to delivering advanced on-scene care that can significantly improve patient outcomes. Training remains at the core of everything we do and is essential to providing the best possible care for our patients.

Education is also a major part of our mission within the community. A prepared community is a safer community. Each year, we provide CPR, Stop the Bleed, and First on Scene training for local fire companies, churches, civic organizations, camps, and youth groups. Last year alone, more than 100 individuals participated in our training programs. If your organization or group is interested in any of these trainings, please reach out to get on our schedule.

Finally, if you are interested in volunteering with our department, all training is provided free of charge, and we are happy to help guide you on your journey into EMS. We would love to hear from you!
