City of Herrin Fire Department This is the official page for the City of Herrin, IL's Fire Department. PLEASE DO NOT use this page for Emergency Notifications.

The Herrin Fire Department consists of a Full-time Fire Chief, three full-time Captains, three full-time Lieutenants, nine full-time Firefighters and 2 paid-on-call Firefighters. The full-time personnel belong to the International Association of Firefighters Union and are Local 3251. There are three shifts that work 24 hours on and 48 hours off. There is a Captain, Lieutenant, and three Firefighte

rs assigned to each shift. The HFD is an ISO Class 3 department beginning February 1, 2018. The HFD is an all-hazards department. Services provided but not limited to: fire suppression, hazardous materials, technical rescue, dive/water rescue and recovery, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drone), Extrication at motor vehicle accidents, Emergency Medical Responder. The HFD is part of the State of Illinois Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, Division 45. HFD houses 2 divisional assets: Western Shelter and Marine 45. Members are part of the following MABAS teams: Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue and Dive/Sonar.

This afternoon, while it was 101° HFD was toned to a residential structure fire with someone inside. Upon arrival the resident was out and a general alarm was requested. The initial interior crew contained the fire to a room contents fire.

HFD has members of MABAS teams, responds to local mutual aid through MABAS box cards, and has responded/deployed in and out of state for disasters....all part of MABAS. Currently, HFD, houses two assets. The Western Shelter and the division 45 double decker boat package.

NO WARNINGS: We have been made aware that there may be one or more outdoor warning sirens partially activating. We have contacted the service company.

Earlier this morning HFD and Carterville Fire Department were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Rt 13 just East of Samuel Rd, in the Westbound Ln. Upon arrival CFD found a semi truck jack knifed with a punctured fuel tank, leaking diesel fuel. The MABAS Div 45 hazmat team was called bringing extra personnel from area departments along with supplies to mitigate the incident.

There were no injuries as a part of the incident or response. Thank you to all the area department team members and assisting agencies.

At last night's council meeting (08/10/2026) I had the privilege of presenting EMS life saving awards to several members...

At last night's council meeting (08/10/2026) I had the privilege of presenting EMS life saving awards to several members of the HFD. These awards came from two different EMS calls that both resulted in saving lives. Members presented w/ awards were:
Capt. Coriasco, Ret. Capt. Yates, Lt. Pursell, Lt. Carr, FF. Coriasco, and FF. Phillips.

Well done gentleman and greatly deserved!

How to obtain official information regarding the house explosion incident.

The house explosion was in the Village of Energy. HFD responded via mutual aid to the Energy Fire Department. The Herrin Fire Department will not be releasing information or a statement about this response since it is not our primary coverage area.
