The 1913 Labor Day Celebration in Herrin is the subject of this week's article in the Herrin Independent.

I'm bummed. Our microfilm skips April, 1912. But! I did find this information from the National Weather Service: 4/21/1912
A violent F4 tornado struck the southern Illinois counties of Jackson, Williamson, and Franklin. It produced 11 fatalities and 83 injuries along the 20 mile path. It moved ENE from three miles north of Murphysboro, passing through Bush, before moving about six miles north of Herrin and into Pershing in Franklin County.
So this storm may have taken out the Dillard School.

I wasn't able to find anything out about the Dillard School, but I did find Dillardtown. I clipped an article from the Southern Illinois from 1958 that gives a good description of where Dillardtown was located. I also took a screenshot of a Google map showing the intersection of Pershing/Freeman Spur Road. So, now I believe the Dillard school may have been destroyed in an early 1900's storm or at the latest, the 1925 tornado. There is another postcard showing damage from what photographer E.E. Burkitt referred to as the "4-21-12 Cyclone Scene, near Herrin, ILL." I'm going to need to look at some microfilm. ...after the booksale is over and the 1960's Homecoming display is complete. Busy! Busy! Busy!

Herrin Police Chief Dorris brought in several packages of old postcards. I've been working on the big book sale and this is the first chance I've had to post one. I'd love to know where this school was located. John Dillard might be able to provide information or maybe Williamson County Illinois Historical Society can help us out.

Does anyone remember this cabin? Mindy Lisewski posted this request: I'm seeking information on an old cabin that was between South 20th and 21st. It was actually in the alley. When I was a kid in the 60's we would go there and play. It had two animal stalls also. My siblings would go in the cabin as it had been abandoned for years . They told me it was full of stuff, and I had heard it had been one the first stores for Herrin. Any information would be appreciate it.
