Did you know that the American Red Cross helps to reconnect loved ones who have been separated internationally by war, disaster, and other humanitarian crises? Come and learn about this program.

The chaos and confusion of war and disaster often leave families separated when they need each other most, and the pain is worsened by a lack of information about how loved ones are faring. Through its Restoring Family Links program, the American Red Cross joins a
global network of teams helping to search for and bring peace of mind to families through
simple messages – sometimes just single phrases like, “I am alive,” or “I am safe.”

This program will present archival materials from the mid-nineteenth century for blackface minstrelsy, which was performed by white musicians in blackface makeup and costume. Blackface performance presented oppressive views of people of color as uneducated, poorly spoken, and comical. These depictions were a result of, and contributed to, American racism in the time of slavery. Simultaneously, minstrelsy’s music demonstrates hybridity between European and African traditions and contributed to the development of America’s first popular music. Minstrels also performed sentimental parlor songs and parodied opera. This presentation will consider minstrelsy’s multi-faceted representation of American life nearly 200 years ago, the vestiges of which are evident still today.

The Hershey Lions Club is sadly ceasing its popular plastic recycling collection at the Hershey Public Library.
The Trex Company that recycles the plastic has discontinued issuing benches in return for collecting plastic.
You can still drop plastic film off for recycling at most local grocery stores including the Giant on Cocoa Ave.
The Lions Club encourages everyone to continue recycling there and expressed appreciation for your past support of this project. The Hershey Lions Club placed numerous benches around town (Including one at the Hershey Public Library) and collectively helped to keep plastics out of landfills.

Stop by right when we open for a free screening of the indie-lens feature "The Librarians." No registration required!
A brief synopsis of the film:
When Texas lawmakers seek to review a list of books, librarians find themselves on the front lines of a national battle. Across the U.S., librarians face the impact of uniting against library collection standards that include restrictions on race-related and LGBTQIA+ content. Drawing on historical context, The Librarians explores the broader implications for education and public life.
