The Albemarle Commission Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is part of a national network of aging agencies established by the Older Americans Act. As the the region's lead aging agency, the AAA is charged with planning and administrative oversight for our ten counties, including: planning for county-based aging programs and addressing future needs, grant agreements with counties, technical assistance, ad

vocacy, training, education and outreach. The AAA offers a variety of services to Older Adults in the counties of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington. Our services include:

Senior Nutrition– The Senior Nutrition Program promotes, maintains, and improves the health and well-being of older adults through the provision of a nutritionally balanced meal five days per week served in a congregate setting or delivered to the home. Services are available to persons 60 years of age and older and their spouses regardless of age. Long Term Care Ombudsman – The Ombudsman Program is an advocate for residents’ rights and is responsible for investigating complaints made by, or on behalf of, nursing and adult care home residents. Ombudsmen work with residents, family members, concerned citizens, facilities, and public or private agencies to enhance the quality of care and life for residents in long term care facilities. Family Caregiver Support Program– The National Family Caregiver Support Program was established to help family and informal caregivers care for their loved ones at home for as long as possible. FSCP helps caregivers by providing information to connect them with the right resources; counseling, support groups, and education; respite (short term relief); and short term or one time only services. Health Promotion and Disease Prevention – Community-based prevention programs support older adults in maintaining optimal physical, mental, and emotional health. The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention efforts are focused on partnering to deliver evidence-based health promotion programs; reducing the number of falls and fall related injuries; and self-management of chronic diseases. Albemarle Senior Games – The Albemarle Senior Games is sanctioned by the North Carolina Senior Games, which began in 1983 with a vision to create a year round health promotion and education program for adults 50 years of age and better. Each Spring participants can enjoy friendly competition with others in their own s*x and age category in athletic events and artistic categories. Senior Tar Heel Legislature – The Senior Tar Heel Legislature was created to provide information to senior citizens on the legislative process and matters being considered by the North Carolina General Assembly; promote citizen involvement and advocacy concerning aging issues; and assess the legislative needs of older citizens by convening a forum modeled after the North Carolina General Assembly.

💙 Protecting Seniors Starts with Family 💙

During Medicare Fraud Prevention Week, we encourage families and caregivers to talk with their loved ones about protecting their Medicare information.

A Medicare number should be treated like a bank account or credit card number — never shared with strangers, unsolicited callers, or anyone offering “free” products or services.

Families and caregivers play an important role in helping older adults:
✔️ Recognize scams
✔️ Review Medicare statements
✔️ Avoid suspicious calls or offers
✔️ Report possible fraud

By working together, we can help protect older adults from Medicare fraud and scams.

⚠️ SCAM ALERT FOR MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES ⚠️

If someone calls offering “free” items like back or knee braces, food boxes, or extra benefits in exchange for your Medicare number — be careful. It could be a scam.

Scammers use these offers to steal personal information and commit Medicare fraud. Protect yourself by:
✔️ Never giving your Medicare number to unsolicited callers
✔️ Hanging up on suspicious calls
✔️ Reviewing your Medicare statements for unfamiliar charges
✔️ Reporting suspected fraud

During Medicare Fraud Prevention Week, the Senior Medicare Patrol reminds older adults and caregivers that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Help us spread awareness and protect our seniors from fraud.

After a devastating fire forced them to close their doors last year, we are excited to welcome Captain Bob's BBQ & Seafood Restaurant back to the Senior Nutrition Program serving Perquimans and Chowan Counties.

We are grateful for their partnership and support of older adults in our communities. Their return means so much to the seniors we serve, and we are thrilled to have them back as part of our Meals on Wheels family.

We also want to extend a special thank you to Montero's Restaurant for stepping up over the past year to ensure older adults continued to receive nutritious meals during this transition. Their support and commitment to our seniors has been greatly appreciated.

Welcome back, Captain Bob’s — we are excited for this new chapter together!

June 1st-5th is National Medicare Fraud Prevention Week! This important week focuses on the actions everyone can take to prevent Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse.

Medicare loses an estimated $60 billion each year due to fraud, errors, and abuse, though that number is impossible to measure. Every day, issues related to these problems affect people across the country, often costing them time, money, and their well-being.

Join the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) to prevent, detect and report Medicare Fraud in your community. For more information about SMP or how you can get involved, contact the Area Agency on Aging at 252-404-7090!
