Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Department

Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Department An all hazard combination emergency services organization. It is served by 12 volunteers and 1 full time Fire Chief and 1 full time Assistant Fire Chief.

The Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District (FLMFPD) was formed in 1982, and encompasses 357 square miles of rural Southwest La Plata County, in Southwest Colorado. The FLMFPD serves the unincorporated towns of Breen, Hesperus, Marvel and Red Mesa, utilizing five stations. Two major transportation corridors transverse the FLMFPD, Colorado State Highway 140 and US Highway 160. Colorado State 140,

a 23 mile north-south corridor, crosses into New Mexico at the southern boundary of the FLMFPD and is a narrow 2 lane road. US Highway 160, is a 21 mile designated Haz Mat corridor, crosses the entire FLMFPD from east to west and is 3 lane road which has a section with the highest accident fatality rate in Colorado. These roads also have heavy tourist traffic due several National Parks in the vicinity. The non-highway road infrastructure in the district is approximately 85% unpaved, two lane gravel surfaces. The land within the FLMFPD is primarily agriculture, with approximately 1,048 residences. There are extensive oil and gas drilling operations being conducted in the district with several major pipelines and a coal mine which creates dangerous traffic burdens for our residents. The district's terrain is comprised of steep rocky hills and mesas separated by narrow canyons all of which are covered by pinion, juniper and old growth pines. The districts average elevation is approximately 7200 feet; the climate is semi-arid which leads to extremely challenging wildland fire situations, especially recently with several years of drought conditions.

Pack test…

05/16/2026

I just got done watching 9 Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District Volunteer Firefighters doing their pack test. It is a hard test that challenges all taking it. In the end they get a little red card and have the ability to go out on a Federal fire in a hot, smokey, dusty, dirty fire that can be threatening houses but in reality most times is burning sage, dead grass and trees heading towards the houses. While the rest of us were having coffee, breakfast, still in bed these volunteers are packing a backpack of 45 pounds, 3 miles in 46 minutes and 15 seconds in order to get that little red card. The test started at 7 am and 9 volunteers took it and 9 volunteers passed it. There are others in the department that have passed it on another day earlier. They don’t do this for kudos. They do it to help people in our community, some they know but most times they don’t know them. They are the dedicated volunteers that are out at 2 in the morning for anything from broken bones, a person having a heart attack, hitting a deer or elk, a DUI rollover, car crashes, some minor injuries or some serious injuries or with fatalities, . They have already and or someday will see things that make sleep impossible for them at night. They do their best for this community. Their training is not easy, it’s time consuming after a long day at work and weekends. They have families that are missing them that also are making a sacrifice for their community. What they are doing isn’t easy but thank God someone is willing to do this for us. The few that step up and actually do help their community with no expectations just because they are truly good people. Thank you for your service! Some of you I’ve known since you were kids even the old fella I’m married to. You all have my support and respect! You all are amazing people! I’m so proud of you and the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Department! I just found out some who did this today had already passed their test. That’s pretty cool that they would do it again to walk with others who needed to take the test!

From our friends at Upper Pine River Fire Protection. Great opportunity to make sure those car seats and boosters are properly installed.

As it has been reported Saturday‘s discovery of a fatal car crash is both a tragedy and a miracle for the 5 y/o. It weighs heavily not only on our crews but for the family and the public who have suffered a loss, expressed their condolences and offered their prayers. It just so happens a car and booster seat class was already scheduled. Often people are well aware of the car seat requirements but often are unaware of the booster seat needs. There are clips and proper installation requirements it is a lot more than you think to understand how the system works to protect children in a vehicle. A great project for a church, community group, schools, etc..This class currently has only 4 people in it. It is at risk of being canceled. If you can spare the time PLEASE consider it.

Fun was had by all at the “Are You Smarter Than a Firefighter?” Auxiliary fundraiser.

Turns out our firefighters are pretty smart, too. Nights like this remind us why small towns are the best—neighbors showing up for neighbors and supporting the Auxiliary who keeps our fearless firefighters fed, hydrated, and unstoppable.

🔥🚒 Training never stops at FLMFPD—and that’s by design. 🚒🔥

Our volunteers were back at it last Saturday focusing on structure fire operations, and this time it was a multi‑agency effort alongside our friends and neighbors from Mancos Fire Protection District, Rico Fire Protection District, Dolores Volunteer Fire & Rescue, and Cortez Fire Protection District. Training together helps ensure smoother coordination and stronger teamwork when we respond to real incidents across the region. 💪

Structure fire scenarios place crews in tough, realistic conditions—stretching hose lines, reading smoke, communicating clearly, and operating safely when visibility is low and situations change fast. 🏠🔥 These drills sharpen fundamentals, build trust between agencies, and help make safe, confident actions second nature.

👏 We’re incredibly grateful for our volunteers—and our partner agencies—who continue to show up committed to learning, improving, and serving their communities. This kind of collaboration truly makes us all stronger.

🌾🔥 With dry conditions continuing, please stay fire‑aware and help reduce fire risk wherever possible.

Prepared through training. Ready to serve.
