Firefighters face significantly higher rates of cancer diagnosis and death than the general public — occupational cancer is now a leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service. That's why we're taking action.

We're honored to be recognized as Iowa's 8th Gold Helmet Department through the National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer, run by NIOSH National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (part of the CDC), for enrolling a strong majority of our firefighters in the .

The NFR is the largest research effort ever undertaken to understand and reduce cancer among U.S. firefighters. This data helps researchers spot patterns, identify risk factors, and build better prevention and protective measures nationwide.

Congratulations to our members for helping drive this work forward — and a special thanks to Fire Medic Tyler Becker for leading our department's effort!

👉 Are you a current, former, or retired firefighter? You can join the registry too, no matter your department or history with cancer. Every enrollment strengthens the research. Sign up at NFR.CDC.gov

Thank you to the Freedom Festival for inviting us again this year to participate in the exhibition races at the Cardboard Boat Races. Firefighters Kenna, Alec and Sam were able to continue our winning streak. We hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th of July week and if you are in the CR area make sure to visit some of the great events the Freedom Festival has!

This week we had several members of our Peer Support Team attend the Mental Wellness Symposium in Iowa City, sponsored by the First Responders Center of Excellence. Their attendance underscores the importance of taking care of our fellow responders, our ongoing commitment to professional development and the advancement of mental health initiatives within our organization.

Our team’s participation was driven by a vital need for first responders to prioritize their own mental health. Thanks Maddie, Kyle and Chris for making us a more resilient department.

Tonight several of our members started their journey to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Over the next several months they will dedicate two nights a week for classroom learning, hands-on skills training, and clinical experience to become certified. It’s a big commitment on top of their regular duties — and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication.

Also a huge shout out to our partners at Monroe Township Fire Department for sending several members to join in on the class.

Watch for updates over the next several months as this group goes through class!
