**REMINDER** - It's Baby Deer Season again. If you find a fawn alone on the ground, please just leave it there. Fawns will be increasingly dropping across Kansas over the next couple weeks.
- During the first 5-8 days, newborns bed down on the ground alone and stay still, even when a person or animal is near them.
- During the next 8-30 days, it will continue to bed on the ground alone and if startled, will quickly run to a new spot to bed on the ground or hide. They will also often make crying or bleating sounds when calling for their mother.
- Momma Doe is likely nearby grazing, so please DO NOT handle them and then call the Game Warden. If an officer shows up to pick up the deer you picked up, they will most likely just take it right back to the same spot and release it. This is their best chance of survival.
SO, please enjoy nature's beauty at a distance.

🚛 THE SPRAY TRUCK KILLED THE MOSQUITOES. AND THE BUTTERFLIES. AND THE BEES. AND THE FIREFLIES.

"The mosquito truck is coming tonight!"
Neighbors cheer. Windows close. Spray fog rolls through.

HERE'S WHAT THE SPRAY ACTUALLY KILLS:

The target: Aedes and Culex mosquitoes
Also killed:
❌ Monarch butterflies (already down 90%)
❌ Honeybees and native bees (foraging at dusk)
❌ Fireflies (peak emergence season)
❌ Dragonflies (which eat 100+ mosquitoes/day naturally)
❌ Moths (pollinators for night-blooming plants)
❌ Ladybugs, lacewings, parasitic wasps (garden defenders)
❌ Lightning bug larvae in the soil

THE CRUEL MATH:
▸ Mosquitoes reproduce every 7-10 days → population bounces back immediately
▸ Butterflies take months to rebuild → population crashes
▸ Fireflies take 1-2 YEARS in soil → population may never recover
▸ Dragonflies take 1-3 years → population decimated
▸ You're selecting FOR mosquitoes and AGAINST everything else

WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS:
✓ Dump standing water weekly (eliminates breeding sites)
✓ Install bat houses (1 bat = 1,000 mosquitoes/night)
✓ Create dragonfly habitat (pond or water feature)
✓ Use Bti dunks in standing water you can't drain (kills only mosquito larvae)
✓ Wear repellent for personal protection
✓ Run a fan on your porch (mosquitoes can't fly in 2 mph wind)

LATE MAY — THE DECISION POINT:
Mosquito spray services are selling contracts RIGHT NOW.
Before you sign:
Ask yourself what else you're willing to lose.

Your fireflies? Your butterflies? Your kids' wonder at summer nights?

The spray truck is not precision medicine.
It's a nuclear bomb dropped on a city to kill one criminal.

Everything dies. And the criminal comes back next week.

The healthier the soil, the more microorganisms it can support, along with greater diversity that helps cycle nutrients and support plant growth. In poor soils, both the number and variety of microorganisms drop, which weakens the soil system and reduces its ability to support healthy plants. 🪱🤎
