Solidarity is forever.

Feminist trailblazer Gloria Steinem (1934–2026) joined legendary activist Dorothy Pitman Hughes (1938–2022) in the 1970s to promote support for women's issues via a series of national speaking tours. In 1971, they immortalized their solidarity and commitment to the movement via an iconic photoshoot for Esquire Magazine.

Four decades later, Steinem and Hughes joined forces yet again to recreate the powerful photograph.

$269,000,000,000. $2,358 per taxpayer.

That’s how much taxpayer money is projected to be spent on mass deportations during the second Trump administration — money that could instead fund necessities in our communities, like teachers, firefighters, nurses, veterans’ medical care, Medicaid, Head Start, SNAP, public housing, and paid parental leave.

We’re constantly told by both Democrats and Republicans that there isn’t enough money to meet people’s basic needs. But as we see with the endless bipartisan wars waged at home and abroad, the resources are there. The question is what they’re being used for — and who they serve.

Under capitalism, our collective resources are weaponized in service of the agendas of the wealthy and powerful, rather than being used to meet the needs of working people.

We need a new system where working people have the power to determine how our resources are used and how our future is planned. That system is called socialism.

A Florida grand jury found that Ron DeSantis’ administration “misappropriated” $10 million in taxpayer money meant to help poor children get health insurance.

Let that sink in.

Money from a Medicaid settlement—funds that should have helped vulnerable Florida families access care—was diverted to Hope Florida, a charity tied to First Lady Casey DeSantis. From there, the money was routed to political committees working to defeat Florida’s 2024 marijuana-legalization ballot measure.

No criminal charges were filed because the grand jury said it could not determine exactly who was responsible. But a lack of charges is not the same thing as accountability. The grand jury still found the money was misappropriated.

Meanwhile, the people in power want Floridians furious at immigrants, trans people, drag queens, teachers, and anyone else they can turn into a political target. They want people to look down, sideways, anywhere but up.

Because when we look up, we see what is happening: powerful Republicans treating public money like a political slush fund while struggling families are told there is never enough help, never enough housing, never enough health care, never enough dignity.

David Jolly is calling for the investigation to be reopened as he faces Byron Donalds in November. Floridians deserve answers—not evasions, not partisan talking points, and not another reminder that the people preaching “law and order” often seem to believe the rules are only for everyone else.
