The North Carolina Certification Board and the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal are in the final stages of the North Carolina Firefighter Certification Standard. This process occurs every 5 years in order to comply with new NFPA standards.

The new standard is set to go live on July 1st of 2027 and the current 2019 standard will sunset on June 30th of 2027. What this means is that the current class model will no longer be offered after June 30th of 2027. Like previous standard changes, there will be a crossover to carry credits for classes taken in the 2019 standard over into the new standard. This bridge has not been released yet so we do not know what this looks like.

Please use the link below, to let us know what classes that you may still need. We will work to put together an evening schedule starting in the October / November timeframe. These classes will be conducted at CVCC's Main Campus or CVCC's Alexander Campus.

🚒 Fire Instructor I – Hybrid Certification Course

CVCC Fire & Rescue is offering a Fire Instructor I Hybrid Certification Course for experienced fire service professionals who are ready to move from doing the job to teaching, mentoring, and developing the next generation of firefighters.

📍 Training Location
CVCC Main Campus – CAD Building

🗓 Course Schedule – Hybrid Format

In-Person Sessions:
July 9 | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
July 30 | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Students must attend both in-person class days to sit for the certification exam.

Online Coursework:
Completed between in-person sessions.

Lead Instructor:
Dr. Rusty Graham

✅ Preregistration Required
Students should preregister using the QR code provided in this announcement.

New students need to complete both preregistration steps.
Current students only need to complete the form with the class title.

✅ NC OSFM Certification Requirements
Participants must meet the following requirements to pursue Fire Instructor I certification:

Minimum age of 21
High school diploma or GED
TIMS / FIP-7000 completed
Three or more years of certified experience as one of the following:
Firefighter
Hazardous Materials Operations Responder
Fire & Life Safety Educator

⚠️ Important OSFM Notes
Individuals who do not yet meet the full three-year experience requirement may attend the course but must retake the course once eligibility is met.

Completion of Fire Instructor I does not automatically authorize instruction in certification programs. Discipline-specific qualification steps are still required.
