Multi-Jurisdictional Response to Propane Leak

This afternoon, shortly after 1:00 p.m., Hickory Fire Engine 1 was dispatched to a reported gas leak in the 1400 block of 2nd Street NE.
Upon arrival, crews discovered two large propane cylinders that had been overfilled, one of which was actively leaking from a pressure relief valve. Crews immediately upgraded the response and requested the Catawba County Hazmat Team, Catawba County Emergency Management, Hickory Engine 2, Battalion 1, and Tanker 7 to the scene.

Personnel from the Catawba County Hazmat Team successfully relieved the excess pressure in the cylinders through a controlled “burn off” procedure, safely mitigating the hazard.

We extend a special thank you to our partner agencies that responded to this incident and played a crucial role in its mitigation:
•  Conover Fire Department
•  Newton Fire Department
•  Catawba County Hazardous Materials Team
•  Catawba County Emergency Management
•  Catawba County Fire Marshal’s Office

Rain or Shine, Hickory Firefighters Are Ready to Answer the Call

Last night’s rainstorm brought much-needed precipitation to the city (not enough to fix our drought, though!) and with it, flash flooding conditions that caused some chaos in the north end of Hickory, with fire department personnel responding to multiple storm-related calls including the one described below👇

Engine 6, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, and Battalion 1 responded to a reported water rescue involving a passenger vehicle in the water. Engine 3 was added to the call replacing Engine 6 after an address correction. Engine 3 arrived on scene to find one vehicle in the water with the occupant out of the vehicle. Engine 3 remained on scene for an extended period and Battalion 1 responded to another urgent call from the scene.

Stay safe, Hickory!

Busy Shift For Hickory Firefighters

Hickory firefighters responded to multiple significant calls this past Tuesday, May 19th, in addition to our “normal calls” throughout the day.

Here are some of the highlights:

Shortly after 4 p.m., personnel from Ladder 2 responded to a two-vehicle collision involving multiple patients. Crews assessed all occupants, and one person was transported by EMS for further evaluation.

At 4:20 p.m., Engine 1 was dispatched to a reported grass fire in a cemetery near the 400 block of Highway 70. Crews on scene quickly upgraded the incident to a large woods fire, bringing additional resources including Engines 3, 5, and 7, Tankers 5 and 7, Rescue 1, and Battalions 1 and 2. Firefighters worked for more than two hours to contain and fully extinguish the blaze.

Shortly before 10 p.m., tones dropped for a structure fire in an apartment complex in the 2800 block of 16th Street NE. Crews from Engines 2 and 6, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, and Battalion 1 responded. Firefighters located a bathroom exhaust fan actively burning in the ceiling and quickly contained and extinguished the fire. There was no extension beyond the bathroom, no significant damage, and no occupants were displaced.

Some images from a grass and woods fire that your Hickory Firefighters from Engines 5 and 7 tackled this past weekend.

Around 3:20 p.m. Saturday, Engine 5 was dispatched to a smoke report in the 2500 block of 15th Ave SE. Engine 5’s crew located a roughly quarter-acre fire burning just off the roadway. Firefighters built out an attack line more than 500 feet long to reach the fire. Due to the size of the blaze, Tanker 5 and Engine 7 were also called to the scene for additional manpower and water.
