The Viola-North Graves Fire Department responded early this morning to an address in Hickory for a report of woods and shed burning. The fire dept has responded to this location numerous times for fires being set, but owner states he doesn’t know who “sets them”. This is a vacant lot that “someone” puts tree limbs, wood and various other materials on and then sets on fire.

National Weather Service Apr. 27, 2026 | 08:49 AM |

The National Weather Service has once again ramped up the outlook for significant severe weather in our region this afternoon and tonight.

Parts of southeast Missouri and southwestern Illinois have been upgraded to a moderate risk (intensity level 4 out of 5) of significant storms.

Elsewhere, they're still expecting an enhanced risk (level 3 out of 5) for supercell storms to form in the afternoon in southeast Missouri. As they move into the quad state, the supercells will likely scale up this evening to a squall line that moves across southern Illinois and western Kentucky.

The significant weather event could include strong tornadoes of EF-3 or larger, destructive straight-line winds and large hail.

Damaging winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour can generally accompany a squall line.

The detailed timeline of the storms' evolution is still unclear, but for now the strongest storm activity in western Kentucky will be tonight from 9pm until 1 am.

A slight risk (level 2) of more severe weather is possible on Tuesday afternoon in western Kentucky and west Tennessee.

Total rainfall between both systems is forecast to be between 1.5 to 3.0 inches. There could be some concerns of brief flooding in places where torrential rains fall at a rate of over two inches an hour.

Behind the cold front, the rest of the week will be much cooler with temperatures slightly below normal in the upper 60s to lower 70s.
