Haddam Volunteer Fire Company

Volunteer Fire Company serving Haddam, Connecticut. Our response area is about 46 square miles populated by about 7,300 people.

The Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responds to all areas in the Town of Haddam west of the Connecticut River, including the Villages of Higganum and Tylerville. We work out of three stations and are an entirely volunteer organization established back in 1930.

Earlier this month, members of Haddam Volunteer Fire Company joined several departments served by Valley Shore Mutual Aid Inc. for a two-day Rural Water Supply Operations class in Killingworth.

The 16-hour training, provided by Got Big Water (GBW) Associates, focused on delivering firefighting water in areas without hydrants. Participants practiced drafting operations, tanker shuttles, and efficient dump-site and fill-site operations.

During the final drill, crews achieved a sustained flow of 3,000 gallons per minute—surpassing the 2,400 gpm achieved during a similar drill in 2013. Eight portable dump tanks and three pumpers supplied three aerial streams and one deck gun.

Thank you for an outstanding weekend of training and teamwork. Exercises like this strengthen our regional response and help ensure that we are prepared when our communities need us most.

On Aug. 17, members of Haddam Volunteer Fire Company participated in a drill at the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Co. training facility.

Members worked in three groups, practicing hose advancement and fire attack, conducting a primary search for a simulated victim, and ventilation using a window prop.

“Training in an unfamiliar building challenges our members to communicate, work together and adapt to changing conditions,” said HVFC Captain Greg Duval. “Opportunities like this help us strengthen the skills we rely on during an emergency.”

During Haddam Volunteer Fire Company's drill night on July 12, members headed to Haddam Meadows State Park to sharpen their marine rescue skills.🚒🚨🔥

Crews practiced water rescue operations, including safely retrieving a patient from the water; marine radio communications; boat operations; and patient care. Additionally, members learned how to use a new electric motor installed on another rescue vessel.

Regular training like this helps ensure our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively to emergencies on the Connecticut River and other bodies of water.

🚒 Congratulations to Richard "Rich" Williams on 50 years of service to the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company!🚒

Rich joined the Junior Division in May 1976 and became a senior member in July 1978. Over the past five decades, he has served in numerous leadership positions, including Captain, Third Assistant Chief, Second Assistant Chief, Representative to the Board of Directors, and Junior Division Chief. He became a Veteran Driver in 2004.

Volunteer service is a proud family tradition for the Williams family. Rich is a third-generation member of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company. His grandfather, Richard F. Williams Sr., attended the dedication of the original HVFC firehouse on Dec. 13, 1930, and served until 1942. His father, Richard F. Williams Jr., served from 1962 to 1996, and his son, Richard "Rick" K. Williams, continued the family tradition as a member from 2006 to 2016.

Rich's 50 years of service represent not only an extraordinary personal commitment but also a family legacy of volunteerism that has helped protect our community for generations.

During the company's monthly meeting on July 6, Rich celebrated the milestone with his family and fellow firefighters. Chief Sam Baber honored him with a 50-years-of-service pin.

Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a motor vehicle accident at 12:15 p.m. today, July 7, on Route 9 North near Exit 19 (Aircraft Road). A tractor trailer with a flatbed rolled over. The operator self-extricated and was transported to Middlesex Hospital via Haddam Volunteer Ambulance Service, Inc. with minor injuries.

The truck was leaking substantial fuel and HVFC and Connecticut State Police requested Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the DOT sand truck. The hazard was mitigated at 3:20 p.m. and the scene was turned over to CSP.

One lane of traffic remained open during the incident.

🔥🔥🔥During Haddam Volunteer Fire Company's weekly drill night on June 15, members reviewed the stages, behavior, and interior dynamics of a structure fire by observing fire spreading inside a training aid resembling a house.

Pioneered by Connecticut Fire Academy Director of Training P.J. Norwood, and constructed with strand board by HVFC Captain Josh Meyer, the fabricated, two-story “house” contained five separated compartments—two on the “ground floor,” two on a “second story,” and an attic. The compartments had removable barriers used to control the ventilation and exhaust of the fire. This allowed firefighters to practice “reading smoke” and identifying the flow path.

The top, left room—labeled number 4—was a completely isolated room and represented a bedroom with a closed door. The room—which instructors checked frequently throughout the demonstration—remained below 180°F whereas other rooms had temperatures exceeding 1100°F. 🔥🔥🔥🚑 🚒

Members watched for about 30 minutes as the fire eventually engulfed the entire structure and collapsed.

“While this demonstration shows firefighters that viable spaces may continue to exist in well involved structures, it also serves as a lesson to the community, that sleeping with a closed door is sleeping safe,” Captain Meyer said.

🔥This month, Haddam Volunteer Fire Company welcomed Junior Division member Andrew Ferguson to the regular membership as a Probationary member. He was sworn in on June 1 as an EMT-track member with a six-month probationary period.

🔥Once a Junior Division member turns 18, he or she can join the regular membership.

🔥 Andrew, who will graduate from Haddam-Killingworth High School on June 18, already completed Introduction to the Fire Service at the Connecticut Fire Academy and is CPR certified. He’s working to become an EMT and plans on taking FFI and FFII, and aspires to become a career firefighter.

Andrew is the son of Will Ferguson of Middletown and Angela Ferguson of Higganum and is the stepson of HVFC Firefighter Jed Morrissey of Higganum.

On June 8, members of Haddam Volunteer Fire Company participated in a rope rescue training exercise on Dublin Hill, across from the Higganum Cove Preserve.

The scenario involved rescuing a person who had fallen down a steep embankment. Members practiced safely reaching the patient, providing medical care, and securing the patient into a rescue litter for removal. 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒🔥

Using rope rescue equipment, crews worked together to safely bring both the patient and rescuers back up the hill.

Training exercises like this help prepare our firefighters for emergencies in difficult-to-reach locations and ensure they can respond safely and effectively when called upon.
