🌧️ HURRICANE ISAIAS UPDATE | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026 🌧️ 📍 Higgston Volunteer Fire Department – Higgston, Georgia

⚠️ Heads up, everyone! Hurricane Isaias is expected to make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast tonight, potentially as a Category 3 major hurricane. While the storm is expected to move away from our area by tomorrow night, South Georgia could experience periods of heavy rain and gusty winds overnight and throughout Saturday.

🌬️ WHAT WE NEED TO WATCH FOR: 🔹 Gusty Winds: Strong wind gusts could bring down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. 🔹 Heavy Rainfall: Bands of heavy rain could bring locally higher rainfall totals, depending on where they develop and stall. 🔹 Possible Isolated Tornadoes: Conditions could support an isolated tornado or brief spin-up tornado on Saturday. 🔹 Hazardous Conditions: Standing water, downed limbs, and power lines could create dangerous situations.

📍 FOR OUR HIGGSTON COMMUNITIES:

Please take time this evening to prepare for the possibility of worsening weather overnight and into Saturday.

✅ Secure loose outdoor items.
✅ Charge cell phones and portable power banks. ✅ Keep flashlights and extra batteries available. ✅ Avoid driving through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don't Drown!
✅ Stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
✅ If a tornado warning is issued for your location, seek shelter immediately in a small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.

🚨🌪️ SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS — PLEASE READ 🌧️⚠️

Higgston Volunteer Fire Department is encouraging everyone in our community to take a few minutes today to prepare for the possibility of severe weather.

According to the National Weather Service Atlanta, periods of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and possible tornadoes are forecast across parts of Georgia from tonight into Saturday night.

🌬️ STRONG WINDS: Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, decorations, and anything else that could become airborne. Falling trees and limbs could cause power outages.

🌧️ HEAVY RAIN & FLOODING: Avoid flooded roads and low-lying areas. Never drive through standing water.

🌪️ TORNADO SAFETY: Make sure you know where to shelter. If a warning is issued, move to an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.

🔋 BEFORE THE WEATHER ARRIVES:
• Charge your phones and backup batteries.
• Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy.
• Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
• Check on elderly family members and neighbors.
• Bring pets indoors and secure outdoor items.

🚨🌀 WEATHER UPDATE — STAY WEATHER AWARE 🌀🚨

Hurricane Isaías is strengthening over the Central Gulf and is forecast to move north toward the northern Gulf Coast on Friday.

The National Weather Service is increasing its concern for potential impacts across North and Central Georgia Friday night through Sunday morning.

For our area, the primary concerns include:

💨 GUSTY WINDS: Long-duration wind gusts of 30–40+ MPH will be possible. Stronger gusts could bring down tree limbs, trees and power lines, creating the potential for power outages and debris.

🌧️ HEAVY RAIN: Periods of heavy rainfall are possible, with localized flash and river flooding becoming a concern in areas that receive heavier or prolonged rainfall.

🌪️ TORNADOES: Tornadoes are also a potential threat as rain bands and thunderstorms move through the area. Do not ignore a Tornado Warning, even if conditions outside your home don't initially appear severe.

⚠️ NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE

🔋 Charge your phones and backup batteries.

📱 Make sure emergency weather alerts are turned on and that you have more than one way to receive warnings.

🌳 Secure outdoor furniture, decorations, trash cans and anything else that could become airborne in strong winds.

🧹 Clear leaves and debris from ditches, drains and culverts around your property.

🔦 Prepare for the possibility of power outages with flashlights, batteries, medications and other necessities.

🏠 Know your safe place. If a Tornado Warning is issued, move to a small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.

🚗 TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN. Never drive through flooded roadways. Water can be deeper and moving faster than it appears.

🚒🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 5 🔥🚒

SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES.

A working smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to get your family out safely. 🔥🏠

✅ Test your smoke alarms once a month
✅ Replace batteries when needed
✅ Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older
✅ Make sure there is a smoke alarm inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home
✅ Never remove the battery because of nuisance alarms — find the cause and fix it!

🔥 Remember: When the alarm sounds, get out and stay out!

Take a few minutes today to check your smoke alarms. That little beep could make the difference between getting out safely and not getting out at all.

🚒🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK — DAY 4 🔥🚒

🍳 THE KITCHEN ISN’T THE PLACE TO WALK AWAY.

You put something on the stove, get distracted for “just a minute,” and suddenly that minute can turn into something much more serious.

Cooking fires can happen fast — and they don’t always start with a big flame.

If you’re cooking today, remember:

👀 Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or cooking with high heat.

🔥 Keep anything that can catch fire — towels, paper towels, oven mitts, packaging, and more — away from the stovetop.

🫕 If a small grease fire starts, turn off the heat if it is safe to do so and slide a lid over the pan.

🚫 NEVER use water on a grease fire.

🚪 If a fire gets out of control, get out, stay out, and call 911.

The best time to think about what you’ll do during a kitchen fire is before there is one.

A few extra seconds of attention in the kitchen can prevent a lifetime of consequences. ❤️‍🔥

🔋 CHARGE SMART. CHARGE SAFE.

We use our phones, tablets, gaming devices, tools, and other electronics every day. Charging them has become such a normal part of life that it's easy to forget they can become a fire hazard when something goes wrong.

Today, take a quick look at what's charging in your home.

⚡ Don't charge devices under pillows or blankets.
⚡ Keep chargers and devices on a hard, flat surface.
⚡ Don't use cords that are frayed, damaged, or hot to the touch.
⚡ Use the correct charger for your device.
⚡ Give charging devices plenty of room to breathe.

🔥 Don't let something as simple as charging your phone become the start of a fire.

This week is all about reminding our community that fire safety starts before the fire ever happens.

🔋 Keep an eye on lithium-ion batteries and charging devices
🚪 Know two ways out of every room
🚨 Test your smoke alarms regularly
🏠 Make sure your family has a home escape plan
🧯 Talk to your kids about what to do if a fire happens
