We want to send a massive thank you to the amazing volunteers who traveled from near and far to support us during spring migration. From selling merch and collecting admissions to helping visitors spot "lifers" from the canopy, your hard work kept everything running smoothly during one of our busiest times of year. We are incredibly grateful for your hard work and look forward to seeing you throughout the rest of the year and again next April!

While our seasonal kiosks have closed, the volunteer signups have not! Our sanctuaries are open 365 days a year which means there are always volunteer opportunities available. Visit www.houstonaudubon.org/volunteer to learn more and sign up today!

We want to send a big thank you to our partners who made this spring so special for our visitors.

First, a huge shout-out to Sabrewing Nature Tours for leading our free guided nature walks at Bolivar Flats, Smith Oaks, and Boy Scout Woods. If you missed them this year, they’ll be back next spring to lead the way again.

We also want to thank the wonderful team at Land Sea & Sky. Their staff spent April at Smith Oaks, giving visitors the chance to test out top-tier binoculars and scopes right in the field. Plus, a portion of every purchase made during their time at High Island goes directly back to supporting Houston Audubon!

We are incredibly lucky to have such dedicated experts supporting Houston Audubon. Thank you for joining us this season!

The North winds have meant a nice smattering of migrants in the woods today and yesterday. These are some of the sightings from Smith Oaks today. The other High Island sanctuaries have been similarly birdy.

Tomorrow's the big day! Saturday, April 4th, is Free Admission Day! We are waiving all entry fees at our High Island sanctuaries to welcome everyone to the magic of spring migration! Bring the family out for a day of nature exploration where our staff and volunteers will be available to help you spot wildlife and answer all of your birding questions. Plus, enjoy free classes at the Morse Field Station, Flock Talks at the Rookery, and a visit to kiosks to pick up some Houston Audubon merch.

- To ensure a smooth experience for everyone during this busy spring migration, please keep these safety reminders in mind:
- Do not stop in the middle of the road to look at birds. Please pull completely off the road and use your hazard lights. Law enforcement will issue tickets for those parked NOT fully off the road.
- Do not scan for birds while operating a vehicle. Please pay full attention to the road and be aware of others on the road at all times.
- Parking lots will be crowded. Drive slowly and watch for pedestrians. During busy weekends, staff or volunteers may be directing traffic. Please follow their instructions. Overnight parking is not permitted.
- Speed limit in Houston Audubon sanctuaries is 10 mph. Please drive slow. We reserve the right to refuse entry for reckless driving.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to our sanctuaries for some spectacular birding! Thank you for helping to make this a safe and fun experience for everyone.

Whoah! The support for our new Bolivar acquisition is immediately paying off. Our staff member spotted this rare Gyrfalcon in our area and stopped to take a photo, not realizing they also got the little guy on the bottom left. What an amazing start to spring! If you come down to see these rarities, please make sure to give the birds their space and remember it's 😜

You may not find these birds, but there are plenty of others waiting for you at Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary! Visit our website at https://houstonaudubon.org/conservation/sanctuaries/bolivar-flats/ for everything you need to know before you go!

Is your tee shirt drawer full?? Bring your extras to High Island we will sell them and the profits will go to conservation. They don’t have to be High Island shirts but do need to be bird shirts.

Bolivar Birds eat, sleep, and play on the beach too!

Here are some simple tips on how to share the shore with beach nesting birds this spring:
🏖️Fish, Swim, and Play from 50 Yards Away (50 yards equals 15 beach towels laid out end-to-end)
🐶Keep your Pup on a Leash and Away from Birds
🗑️Pick up Trash
🎣Dispose of Fishing Line

If everyone does these simple things, will continue to visit our beaches year after year!
