At 08:00 today (September 7, 2025), we said goodbye to Fire Equipment Operator Garth Stowe as he completes his last tour with the High Point Fire Department. Appointed on June 12, 2017, Garth served as the FEO on Engine 9, B-Shift—a fireman’s fireman. He was happy-go-lucky, relentlessly positive, and had that rare gift of making any room lighter the moment he walked in. His experience, humility, and kind heart will leave a very real void in our service to the citizens of High Point.
Garth isn’t leaving the work—he’s leaving a culture that too often forgets where leadership really lives: in the streets, on the rig, and at 3 a.m. kitchen tables. When people who lift stations and companies up don’t feel engaged or valued, even the best eventually look elsewhere. That’s not a knock on them, it’s feedback for us. We hope this moment prompts reflection at every level, especially those who wear ties, because departures like this have become far too common.
We can, and must, do better. Every firefighter should feel seen and supported. Competitive compensation, top-tier training, and safe, reliable equipment aren’t extras; they’re the basics. Engagement isn’t a memo, email, newsletter, or staff meeting; it’s a daily practice. It’s a genuine and sincere involvement.
To our friend Garth: thank you for the smiles, the steady hands, and the quiet professionalism on every call. We wish you and your family nothing but the best in what’s ahead. Go forth and prosper, and make us proud! We’ll be here doing the work to ensure the next “Garth” doesn’t have to leave to be valued. Stay safe, brother!
