🚨 EXTREME HEAT ALERT 🚨

High temperatures and dangerous heat are expected to move into our area beginning Thursday and continuing through the July 4th holiday weekend.

Forecast highs are expected to reach the upper 90s to near 100°F by Friday and remain dangerously hot through the weekend. Heat impacts are expected to range from MAJOR to EXTREME, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses for anyone spending extended time outdoors without proper hydration or cooling.

⚠️ Please plan ahead for the heat:
💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day—even if you don’t feel thirsty.
🏠 Stay indoors or in air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the day whenever possible.
👵 Check on elderly family members, neighbors, young children, and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.
🐶 Don’t forget your pets—provide fresh water and shade, and never leave children or animals in a parked vehicle.
🌙 Overnight temperatures will remain warm, providing little relief from the heat.

If you’re spending time outdoors for work, recreation, or holiday celebrations, take frequent breaks, wear lightweight clothing, and know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

As you prepare for the week and holiday weekend, please consider the extreme heat when planning activities and be mindful of these conditions during any emergency situations.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and have a safe Independence Day weekend!

🚒 Historic Win for High Point Firefighters.

This morning, the City of High Point Government City Council voted 5–3 to extend the Special Separation Allowance (SSA) to our firefighters — a benefit that moves us one meaningful step closer to retiring with dignity.

While we remain encouraged by this vote, we understand the final framework and funding structure have yet to be determined. We look forward to working with city leadership on a program that mirrors the SSA already in place for our police officers — as expressed by City Manager Logan Ford during today's meeting.

We are grateful to the council members who cast their votes in favor of our firefighters:

✅ Mayor Jefferson
✅ Councilman Andrew
✅ Councilman Holmes
✅ Councilmember Dr. Harman
✅ Councilmember Peters

This benefit strengthens the City of High Point Fire Department's ability to attract and retain the talented men and women who protect our community every day. The work continues, but today, we celebrate a step in the right direction.

🔥 Structure fire with Victim Rescued 🔥

While members of Rescue 2 “A” were out performing routine maintenance of hydrants in district, they noticed smoke coming from a residential home. Members responded swiftly and promptly to find a working fire and upon entering the home found an unconscious victim inside. These members successfully knocked down the fire and began resuscitation efforts for the victim who is now in stable condition.

We are PROUD to serve the City of Salisbury and its residents and this is just another example of the incredible and heroic work performed by your firefighters.

📰 WE'RE IN THE NEWS — AND THE PRESSURE IS ON 📰

FOX8 WGHP covered our fight today, and we want to make sure every High Point resident sees it.

Greensboro just passed its budget — and it includes a Special Separation Allowance for its firefighters. Now the question every High Point firefighter is asking is: when does our city do the same?

As HPPFFA President Robert Templeton told FOX8:

"When somebody like Greensboro gets a huge bump like what they've got, all of our guys are going... 'Greensboro is looking at their firefighters' health, their safety and their dignity for their retirement.'"

This isn't about money for money's sake. It's about the reality of what firefighting does to the human body:

🔥 Firefighters face exponential cancer risks compared to the average worker.
🔥 Most High Point firefighters retire between 50 and 55 years old, and when they do, the cancer doesn't retire with them.
🔥 The police department has had a version of this benefit since the 1980s. Our firefighters deserve the same.

The City of High Point has not announced when they plan to approve a budget. We've heard the delays before. Our members — and our retirees — can't afford to wait.

Neighboring cities are acting. Greensboro acted. Wilmington acted. New Hanover acted. Gastonia and Mooresville already have separation allowances in place.
