Hello Southwest Family,
This is your proud principal, Dr. Richmond, calling with your news for the week of August 30.

At the Ranch
-Our first week went smoothly. During the middle school years, students will face a whole host of challenges from emotions, to discovering who they are, to conflicts. My hope is that we will work together and guide our students through any challenge that may arise. I have nothing but hope in our kids and hope in Southwest Middle School.

-Please be reminded of courtesy during the car rider line. If you are trying to merge put on your turning signal. Do not pass everyone in this attempt. Be patient. As my grandfather would say, if every person let one person go then traffic would be fine.
-We will start to count student tardies this week. Students are expected to be in the building by 8:25am. If for some reason the car rider line gets too backed up, we will adjust that expectation in real-time. Please ensure students are in school and on time as much as possible.

-We are a Class Dojo School for all communication. If you have not been able to get connected, please reach out to your child’s teacher/s.

Athletics
-Congratulations to those that made fall sports teams. Practices will begin this week. Coaches are setting up Class Dojo accounts that we will use for all communication.

-Cheerleading tryouts will start tomorrow August 31.

What happened this week in 6th grade Social Studies? y’s social studies lesson. Students created their own globes using balloons, drawing and labeling the continents and oceans. It was a hands-on way for them to connect with the material, and they were excited to see the world take shape in a way they built themselves.

This week our AMAZING coaches, Mrs. Dillard and Mrs. Walsh, set up a "Cookies with Coaches" event to help jump start conversations around curriculum, lesson planning, and what support looks like at the start of the year for teachers. We are thankful for the donations from Sweet Dough Bakery as the treats were just the right "pick-me-upper" in the midst of week 1.

8th graders are getting real-world with applying for various school jobs that will become available. Students can currently apply to raise or lower flags. Their application includes a section for a reference. After applying, they will have an interview.

| Mrs. Brakes' 7th grade ELA class is off to a great start with collaboration. Groups had to decide on their recorder, their speaker, and figure out what agreements are necessary for the running of an effective classroom.
