High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization

The High Point Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (HPMPO) is responsible for an on-going, cooperative effort by local, state, and federal governments to do the following:

1) Identify transportation needs by analyzing existing conditions and trends and make projections of future changes.

2) Provide a factual basis for public policies and goals to meet the needs of people and their orga

nizations.

3) Prepare a plan in which streets, public transit, highways and other means of moving people and goods are properly related to plans and programs for the physical, social, economic and environmental development of the High Point urban area.

4) Maintain a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive planning process that will enable plans to be kept up-to-date to meet changing conditions and enable the region the qualify for federal transportation funds. Transportation planning helps meet the region’s transportation needs, determine “first things first” priorities, and avoid expensive construction mistakes. It is the basis for the MPO’s long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) as well as the Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Program (MTIP), and serves to guide the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the member jurisdictions in the construction of streets and highways. It has enabled the region to use federal and state funds to serve local needs.
