Great save, Luke!

Luke Thompson from your High Springs Public Works Department was clearing a branch that fell in the middle of the road, when he spotted this little guy. We'll call him "Rocky" (100 points if you get the reference) in the pile with a cut on his nose.

Mr. Thompson took Rocky to the animal hospital, where they will care for him until wildlife rescue is able to pick him up and release him back to the wild when he's ready.

Great save, Luke!

How sinkholes form – SJRWMD

Sinkholes have been the primary focus for us these last 36 hours. While we know sinkholes are a part of life in our area, truly understanding the science behind how "sinks" are formed is excellent knowledge to have.

This article from St. Johns River Water Management District explains how sinkholes form and what to look for to see if you're at risk of having one form near you.

Sinkholes are part of the slow, natural process of erosion in Florida’s limestone terrain that occur over thousands of years. These common geologic phenomena generally occur where the limestone is within a few hundred feet of the land’s surface.

A Joint Release from High Springs Fire Department and Alachua County Fire Rescue on the rescue of a dog from a sinkhole this morning in High Springs.

WATCH: Dramatic video of the rescue courtesy of ACFR's UAS team: https://tinyurl.com/uask9

At 6:35AM Monday, September 14th, High Springs and Alachua County Firefighters were dispatched to 22210 NW 188th Street for a report of a dog stuck in a hole.

Once on scene, HSFD Engine 29 crew found a dog trapped in a sinkhole roughly 40 feet deep. The sink had been a stable depression on the property for the last several days before finally giving way. Assisting with the rescue was Alachua County Fire Rescue's technical rescue unit, Squad 23.

A methodical preparation process led to ACFR Lt. Brian Ferguson, using an extension ladder and rope system, to descend into the sinkhole to rescue the dog. Once at the bottom, Lt. Ferguson found a frightened, but thankful pup. The dog was successfully removed from the hole uninjured.

This is the second technical rescue in a sinkhole in as many days in High Springs. While sinks are common in our area, the extended periods of rain seen recently may cause further sinkholes to open or deepen.

Nineteen years ago today, the world changed. The lives of thousands were forever different after losing a mother, father, son, daughter, husband or wife.

But what happened in the weeks following, is something that we long for again. A sense of unity. A sense of belonging. We were all Americans. We yearn for a return to that. Enough division. Enough hate. We need love, peace, understanding and community again.

A moment of levity while all eyes are on the Caribbean.

Tropical Storm Laura, the artist formerly known as TD13, is the storm to watch for us. While it's still too early to know what Laura will bring our way, a quick refresh of the Hurricane snacks and supplies is a good idea.

Don't panic. Just prepare.
