📚🚌 BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER! 🚌📚

As students head back to school, the Highland Falls Police Department reminds drivers, parents, and students to make safety a priority! 🚸

🚍 Around School Buses:
• Stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
• Slow down and remain alert around bus stops.
• Students should stay a safe distance from the curb and look both ways before crossing.

🏫 In School Zones:
• 📵 Put the phone down and eliminate distractions while driving.
• 🐢 Slow down and obey the posted school-zone speed limit.
• 🚸 Use designated areas for student pick-up and drop-off.
• 👀 Watch carefully for children walking, biking, and crossing the roadway.

Officers will be proactively monitoring speeds in school zones during school hours and will be ticketing violators.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who knew and served alongside Detective Thompson. May his service, dedication, and memory never be forgotten.

It is with extremely heavy hearts that the Town of Newburgh Police Department announces the passing of Detective Christopher Thompson.

Detective Thompson began his career with the Town of Newburgh Police Department in April of 2017, after previously serving with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Wallkill Police Department.

Throughout his career, Detective Thompson served the Town of Newburgh Police Department in numerous roles and was a valued member of several specialized units. He served in the Patrol Division, as a K-9 Handler with the K-9 Unit, an active Fi****ms Instructor with the Fi****ms Unit, a General Topics Instructor, and a Team Leader on the Department’s Tactical Unit. Most recently, Detective Thompson served as an Investigator in the Detective Bureau.

Detective Thompson’s dedication to his profession, his fellow officers, and the community he served will not be forgotten. His loss is deeply felt throughout our Department and the entire law enforcement community.

We ask that everyone keep Detective Thompson’s family, friends, and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.

The Town of Newburgh Police Department would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone within the law enforcement community, our local community, and beyond who has reached out and offered their thoughts, prayers, condolences, and support during this difficult time. The outpouring of support for Detective Thompson, his family, and our Department has been truly appreciated.

🚨🚨INJURED BEAR UPDATE 🚨🚨

Highland Falls Police Officers, working alongside the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police, were able to safely guide the injured bear into the wooded area behind the West Point Visitors Center.

At this time, it is expected that the bear will continue following the wooded corridor away from the residential areas. However, if the bear is observed back within the Village of Highland Falls or any residential neighborhood, please notify Highland Falls Police Department Communications immediately at (845) 446-4911.

As a reminder, please do not approach, follow, or attempt to corner the bear. Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation!

🚨BLACK BEAR ADVISORY🚨

The Village of Highland Falls Police Department would like to advise residents that an injured black bear has been observed circling the areas of Tobins Lane, Church Street, Cozzens Avenue, and near Main Street.

At this time, there is no immediate threat to the public.

The Highland Falls Police Department is actively monitoring the bear’s movements while the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police have been notified and are responding to assess the situation.

If you encounter the bear:

* Do not approach or attempt to feed it.
* Do not gather in crowds or corner the bear, as this may cause it to become frightened or defensive.
* Keep children and pets indoors or under close supervision if you are in the area.
* Allow the bear plenty of space to move through the area safely.

If the bear is observed outside of the areas listed above, or if you believe it poses an immediate safety concern, please notify Highland Falls Police Department Communications immediately at (845) 446-4911.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we work alongside the DEC to ensure the safety of both the public and the animal. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
