Researchers are raising new privacy concerns after demonstrating that ordinary WiFi routers can be used to identify and track people with up to 99.5% accuracy. A team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany developed a system called BFId that analyzes wireless signals emitted during normal WiFi operation, allowing individuals to be recognized based on how they move through a space.

What makes the discovery especially notable is that it does not require cameras, access to a WiFi network, or even a device being carried by the person being tracked. Instead, the system relies on unencrypted beamforming feedback data that is already transmitted by many modern WiFi 5 and newer routers. Researchers tested the technology on 197 people and reported extremely high identification accuracy.

Experts say the technology could have legitimate uses in areas such as smart homes, healthcare monitoring, and security systems. However, critics warn that the same capabilities could be exploited for surveillance without a person's knowledge, particularly in offices, public spaces, or shared environments.

The findings have sparked a broader debate about privacy protections as WiFi sensing technology becomes more advanced and widespread. Researchers are urging industry groups and manufacturers to consider stronger safeguards before these capabilities become commonplace. Since 1961, we have been blessed with 3 great lead singers. With each, we found a different type of success. John “Jay” Traynor was soulful and, along with Sandy, Howie, Kenny and Marty, brought the sound of Jay and the Americans to a national audience. When he left, and David Blatt auditioned for the group, we knew our sound would change but we took a leap of faith that audiences would accept his powerful pipes as part of the new Jay and the Americans’ sound. We were right and we had a solid 10 years of hits and live concerts. When we regrouped 20 years ago, and recruited Jay Reincke to join 3 of the original Americans, the nay-sayers outnumbered the supporters about 99 to 1. Once again, a leap of faith paid off and here we are, 65 years after our first recording, still recording and touring. Jay Reincke has been with us twice as long as his predecessor, he’s the only Jay who plays guitar, we’re reaching more fans than ever before (because of streaming and downloads), we are touring more than ever (Jay Black hated to travel so there are parts of the country we never set foot in until Jay number 3 stepped in) and he’s the only Jay who’s never cancelled a show. You may have a favorite - and you’re entitled to that - but we hope that you, like we, respect and admire each of these men for what they contributed to the legacy of our group ❤️🤍💙
