Yesterday, I sat in a Planning Commission meeting from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. ⏰ They went through the Master Plan line by line, talking about development and the future of our city.

There were NO other candidates present.
NO current Council members attended.
And NO other citizens were in the room.❗

But I was there. I listened, learned, and spoke up for the people who have been here through the hard times. 🗣️ I said "The plan sounds good, but do not forget legacy Highland Parkers and the residents who stayed when times were not easy."

You cannot wait until something is already on the Council agenda to learn about it. A Council member has to know what is happening early enough to represent the citizens.

This work takes time. It takes effort. And it takes passion. 💪🏾

I am showing up, doing the work, and preparing to advocate for Highland Park. ✅

DAVISON FREEWAY SOUND BARRIER WALL: LET’S TALK

Although a sound barrier wall along the Davison may only directly affect certain neighborhoods, this is a Highland Park issue.

Communities like Madison Heights, Troy, Hazel Park, and parts of Detroit have freeway sound barrier walls. For years, Highland Park has been overlooked. We deserve the same consideration.

We have to stand together as a city, even when an issue doesn't affect our own neighborhood.

At the DMC Consultants Inc Annual Picnic with Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield.

Many people may not know it, but this young lady is a "preaching machine!"
She preached for me twice at a church I previously pastored, and both times she brought the house down!

It just goes to show that when God has His hand on your life, He can use you in many different places and in many different ways to make an impact.

The Joe Louis Greenway: Let's Talk

As I was poll greeting yesterday, residents asked me several questions. One of the questions asked was about the Joe Louis Greenway.

Today, during my "Walk With Me Wednesday" , I walked the Greenway. As I walked, I thought about those conversations.

I believe the Greenway is a welcome addition to Highland Park. It gives families a beautiful place to walk, bike, and enjoy the outdoors. It also has the potential to attract new investment and bring new life to our community.

But with every opportunity comes questions.

Several seniors and legacy Highland Park residents shared some concerns with me.

They asked:
1. Since Wayne County is paying for the project, what does that mean for Highland Park?

2. Will property taxes go up?

3. As our city grows, will the people who stayed through the hard times still be able to afford to live here?

Those are fair questions.

Many of our seniors live on fixed incomes. They can't afford large increases in taxes or other costs. As Highland Park grows, we should also be talking about ways to protect the people who have called this city home for decades.

I believe we can have both. We can welcome new investment and protect the residents who never gave up on Highland Park.

That is the conversation we should be having, because I believe new developments are going to come as a result of the Greenway.

At the start of this campaign season, I chose NOT to campaign the traditional way.

I did NOT go door-to-door. I did NOT make endless campaign calls or speeches. I did NOT spend my time asking for votes, putting up signs on every corner, or handing out flyers at every event.

Instead, I spent the last two years serving the people of Highland Park. I attended City Council meetings, Planning Commission meetings, City Council workshops, town halls, and community events, HOPING residents would see the value in my efforts to listen to their concerns, work to resolve issues, and serve our community.

Thank you to everyone who noticed the work and helped us advance to the general election.

NOW IT'S CAMPAIGN TIME!

Over the coming weeks, we will be knocking on doors, making phone calls, meeting residents, building relationships, forming alliances, sharing where I stand on the issues, and earning every vote.

Other candidates are saying what they want to do, what they plan to do. But what have they done? I have demonstrated my love for this City and its citizens through my work. If you visit my campaign page, "Robert D. Lodge, Jr., candidate for Highland Park City Council At- Large," you will see events I have sponsored. All the Highland Park City Council meetings are on YouTube; you will see me advocating on behalf of our citizens.

I don't just talk about what I WILL DO. I have proof of what I have DONE. I have never been afraid to stand up for what I believe is right. I stood with my block club to oppose the potential rezoning of our Cul-De-Sac. As community leaders, we have the responsibility to speak out when the community is being overlooked or harmed. Silence has never changed a city.
I believe that citizens deserve to be heard. I have been standing with people, speaking the truth with love, and protecting the well-being of the community. I have often been called to speak when those voices are not being heard.

If you don't believe me, watch the City Council meetings on YouTube; I am there speaking for the people. I don't believe you'll see another candidate with the same consistency that I have given to Highland Park over the last 2 years. I have done it with dignity and respect for the citizens, not with contempt, as if citizens don't have the right to speak.

As a Block Club President and community advocate, I organized a petition that successfully stopped a strip club from opening on Manchester and Woodward. I recently questioned a proposed long-term tax abatement that residents are concerned about. I supported Healing Spring MB Church in its desire to purchase property. I have stood before the City Council numerous times advocating community input and safety. Those are a few examples of me standing up for the citizens of Highland Park. Outside of speaking up, I have organized events such as cardio drumming classes, free Mother's Day mini facials and a City-Wide Senior Day party for our seniors to meet each other.

This is not a temporary play for me; I am oriented to be a voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves. Other candidates are saying what they want to do, what they plan to do. But what have they done? I don't just talk about it; I have been Listening-Working-Serving!!

This is what community partnership looks like. ❤️🏀👮🏽‍♂️

Today, the Highland Park Police Department, Michigan State Police, and the Basketball Cop Foundation came together for "Hoop With A Cop"—building relationships with our youth one conversation and one basketball game at a time.

Events like this help break down barriers between law enforcement and our children. When officers spend time laughing, playing, listening, and encouraging our young people, they help build trust that can last a lifetime.

A special thank you to Officer Monroe for organizing this event. Along with Chief Jim McMahon and all of the Highland Park police officers, Michigan State Police troopers, firefighters, volunteers, and community partners who made this event possible.

Strong communities are built when we invest in our children, work together, and create positive experiences that bring people together.

Today I donated blood at the Highland Park Recreation Center.

The news has reported that there is a -critical blood shortage. If you're able, please consider donating. One donation can help save lives.

Community service happens in a myriad of ways. Sometimes it's attending a meeting. Sometimes it's helping a neighbor. Sometimes it's picking up trash. And sometimes, it's simply rolling up your sleeve to donate blood.

Every act of service, big or small, helps make our community stronger.

A Highland Park resident shared a post with photos showing the overgrown weeds around Glory Market. People spoke up, and our community paid attention.

According to Code Enforcement Officer Najee Malone, the Department of Public Works contacted the owners of Glory Market. If you drive by today, you'll see the weeds have been removed.

This is Highland Park at its best.

For far too long, many people have felt like their voices didn't matter. They do. This is another example that when the people come together and respectfully express our concerns, there are those who listen, and positive change can happen.

It is also a reminder that every business in Highland Park has a responsibility to maintain its property. Clean, well-kept businesses improve the appearance of our neighborhoods, show pride in our community, and help create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

-One resident saw a problem.

-One resident spoke up.

-The community added its voice.

-The City responded.
-The problem was addressed.

This is what happens when citizens get involved. Change doesn't always begin at City Hall—it often begins with one person willing to speak up and a community willing to stand together.

Our voices matter.
One Voice.
One Community.
One Highland Park.
