Earlier today, a shooting took place in the City of Detroit near Woodward Avenue and Hilldale Street, within Detroit’s 12th Precinct. After the incident, the victim left the immediate area and contacted Detroit 9‑1‑1, expressing that he did not feel safe stopping near the scene. He then pulled into the Dollar General parking lot, where he waited for help.

Highland Park Police officers arrived first and ensured paramedics were able to immediately assist the victim. We want to reassure our residents that the shooting did not occur in Highland Park, and the Highland Park Police Department is not involved in the ongoing investigation. That investigation is being handled solely by the Detroit Police Department.

The safety and peace of mind of our community remain our highest priorities. We are committed to keeping residents informed and supporting our neighbors in Detroit, ensuring that all are safe.

As we observe National Police Week, we take this moment not just to recognize a profession or a nation of law enforcement members, but to honor the people behind the badge, for me the men and women of the Highland Park Police Department who serve with courage that often goes unseen and with devotion that cannot be measured.

Every day, my officers step forward with a willingness to protect others, even when the risks are real and the sacrifices, both large and small, are quietly carried. Many of the moments that define their service are never witnessed by the public: the long nights, the difficult calls, the compassion shown in silence, the sacrifices of their families, and the strength it takes to keep going. These acts, whether known or unknown, form the backbone of our community’s safety.

This week, my gratitude is joined by solemn remembrance. Collectively, we honor the brave members of the Highland Park Police Department who gave their lives in the line of duty:

• Patrolman Edgar Phillip La Venture – End of Watch: July 20, 1920
• Patrolman Earnest M. Jones – End of Watch: October 31, 1926
• Detective Sergeant John P. Tsolis – End of Watch: April 16, 1974

Their names are more than part of our history; they are held in our heart. Their courage echoes through our department to this day, reminding us of the true meaning of service and sacrifice. May their memory never fade and may there never be another.

To the women and men who form the Highland Park Police Department, thank you for standing watch so that others may rest safely. Thank you for your resilience, your compassion, and the unwavering commitment you show every single day. I ask each of you to continue to hold the line, steadfast in duty, united in purpose, and unwavering in the face of any challenge.

Your service matters deeply, more than words can fully express.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Chief James McMahon III

WE DID IT AGAIN!!!

Thank you to everyone who supported me in winning the 2026 Chief Chef Competition. While the recognition means a great deal, what truly stands out is the purpose behind it. And trust me, they did not make it easy! I had an incredible time with all the Chiefs of Police, Fire, Security, and our Federal partners.

This same determination is exactly what our department has embraced on a larger scale. As we continue striving for excellence, know that our citizens remain our top priority. Every effort we make is rooted in service and in strengthening the foundation of our community.

I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to all of our sponsors. Your support made this accomplishment possible and reinforces our commitment to the advancement of our youth. The ongoing work of Dr. Dudley and The Youth Connection continues to move our communities forward, ensuring that inner‑city youth have access to guidance, opportunity, and positive direction.

My hope is that every child remains substance‑abuse free and grows into a productive contributor to society.

Congratulations to all of last night’s winners which truly includes all 19 of us who worked together to strengthen our community. The greatest achievement is the cause we stand behind. Winning is an honor, but what matters most is the impact we continue to make. I’m proud of who we are and proud of how we continue to rise above expectations.

What an incredible day at our Autism Awareness Event this past Saturday. Thank you to every participant, volunteer, family member, and supporter who helped make this event truly special. Your presence, your energy, and your kindness created a space where everyone felt seen, valued, and celebrated.

A very special thank you to our Mental Health Clinician, Sherry Miller, who worked tirelessly to make sure our very first autism event was a success. Your dedication and commitment made all the difference.

We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the vendors and resource organizations who joined us. Your services, information, and support helped make this event meaningful for so many families and community members.

People with autism bring unique strengths, perspectives, and brilliance to our community. When we learn from one another, we grow stronger together.

I’m excited to share that I’m defending my title as Chief Chef on Thursday, May 7, 2026 — all in support of an amazing cause: raising funds for The Youth Connection!

We did it before… and with your support, we will win again! I want you to know for me, this is bigger than the competition. This is about communities coming together to invest in our young people and create opportunities that truly change lives.... But I want to be the Chief that leads the initiative LOL

Every single dollar counts — yes, even $1 makes a real impact. Here is the link that takes you directly to my page http://tiny.cc/ChiefMcMahon

Together we can show what Highland Park is made of, make a difference, and keep the trophy right where it belongs…IN OUR HOUSE!😃
