Briergate Depot

Briergate Depot Learn about the ongoing efforts to preserve the historic Briergate Depot structure in Highland Park, Illinois.

We are currently under construction, but will be up and running soon!

Hello everyone. It has been some time since our last update, and we wanted you all to know that our efforts to preserve the former Briergate Depot remain active and ongoing. As of this writing, the property and structure still remain available for lease.

We have recently learned that, in the event the present owner chooses to redevelop the property, it may be possible for us to acquire the depot and have it transported to a permanent location, where it will be preserved from future demolition. This may involve a period of interim storage elsewhere until the arrangements for its ultimate home can be finalized. Furthermore, we have spoken to a party with experience in relocating historic structures, and they have expressed interest in taking on that portion of the project.

That said, if this is to occur (and to be clear, this all remains very tentative for now) it is not going to be cheap. We are a small volunteer organization, and we are going to rely on financial assistance from the public in order to realize this goal. As the situation continues to unfold, we will keep the page updated with any developments pertaining to fundraising and moving plans.

Lastly, it should go without saying, but just to be abundantly clear, we strongly discourage anybody from attempting to contact/harass the owner or trespass on their private property. It will ultimately be their decision as to whether or not they will work with us, so the last thing we want to do is alienate or disrespect them, and jeopardize our efforts thus far.

Much remains up in the air at the moment, but developments may occur rapidly, so continue to keep an eye out on this page for future updates.

Thank you all for your continued interest!

The 1495 Old Deerfield Road property is due to come under new ownership in December. We have established contact with the new owner and ascertained that there are no plans to tear down the structure in the immediate future. Stay tuned for updates, there have been some potential positive developments behind-the-scenes, and we're currently reorganizing the project.

For those who may not be aware, some time around the 4th of July holiday, two vandals broke into the Fox River Trolley Museum (FRTM) in South Elgin and caused over $100,000 worth of damage to their collection of historic interurbans and streetcars. A GoFundMe page has been set up to accept donations towards the extensive repair work that will be required. While this project is not affiliated with FRTM, we can certainly sympathize with any organization dedicated to the preservation of railroad history.

The only thing more broken than the windows damaged inside our Museum barn, were our hearts! The Fox River Trolley Museum suffered a terrible burglary, that was discovered on July 7th. As reported everywhere, two boys, 11 & 13 used pick axes to break through a wall and did over $110,000 of damage...
