The illumination of our bike trail makes it safer and easier to access our downtown. Captured in this photo is the evolution of the trail's lights.

At first, there was only the small light attached to the pole in the background of this photo. This was a step in the right direction, but provided only a minimal amount of light.

Now, pictured in the foreground, we have 68 new solar lights that were approved by the Park Board and installed earlier this year. These lights come on at dusk at a low setting and get brighter as they detect motion around them. The best part: the lights leave no carbon footprint and have no energy cost.

This idea was born from a safety concern when I was the cross country coach at HHS. I would send the boys out for a morning run at 5:00am and raised the idea of illuminating our trail. That’s were the original lights came from, and we were even able to have NIPSCO place two lights up just north of Cady Ditch. Then around five years ago, I re-introduced the idea of solar lights to our Park Board, and they were 100% behind it.

Enhancements like these provide a brighter path for our residents and visitors on the trail, but more importantly, a brighter path forward for our town. Let's keep moving forward on that path.

While we strive to improve and beautify our town and her landscape, we must work to see a complete vision. This area of downtown is the backdrop of our new depot and municipal parking lot. Imagine landscaping it with all native plants and trees to be appreciated by all who live here and visit. Utilizing the help and knowledge of groups like the Highland Neighbors for Sustainability is a great way to bring these types of projects to fruition.

One hour to go! As Election Day draws to a close, I want to take a moment to thank not only my friends/candidates on the Democratic ticket, but also all the candidates on the opposing side. In my opinion, we all conducted ourselves to a level that our town and its voters deserve. Thank you to the hundreds of voters who answered their doors and allowed me to introduce myself and my ideas to them. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be considered as a candidate to lead our great town.

Yesterday evening after the tallying of our towns votes was complete and it was clear who had been elected, I placed a call to my opponent, Mr. Georgeff, to congratulate him and wish him well.

In victory and in defeat, there is a great responsibility to keep our eye on the true goal. I believe that goal in this case is to set an ambitious vision for our town’s future and its future generations. Faith, Family, and Community. I would like to wish all the newly elected council members the very best while serving our great Town of Highland.
