National Soil Day is December 5

Soil vs Dirt
Most gardeners know the difference between soil and dirt. To refresh, DIRT has very few organic materials for plant growth to thrive.
Soil contains organic matter. It is a living environment containing microorganisms, decaying organic matter, fungal hyphae (thread-like growths, roots, earthworms, and insects. All items create a cycle of life and a soil food web.
Although organic matter in soil makes up a relatively small amount of soil by weight (1-5%) an enormous population of microbes and soil animals convert all organic matter to the nutrients vital for plant growth and our existence. Thus, the organic matter we till, spread, shovel, move into our earth and gardens are transformed into inorganic forms (nutrients, potassium, nitrogen) utilized by microbes and plants.
