Also, a super early reminder that pool season is here too! 🏊 There are always children walking in the area around the city pool, so please use extra caution when driving nearby.

🚔 No matter what type of vehicle you drive, one of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up.

From May 11 – May 31, the campaign reminds everyone about the importance of wearing a seat belt — and the legal consequences, including fines, for not buckling up.

✅ Always Remember to Buckle Up

In 2024, 9,758 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts. Among passenger vehicle occupants ages 18 to 34 killed in crashes, 59% were unbuckled — one of the highest percentages of any age group.

✅ Buckle Up the Right Way
• Place the shoulder belt across the middle of your chest and away from your neck
• Place the lap belt across your hips, not your stomach
• Never place the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm

Every trip. Every time. Buckle up and help keep yourself and your passengers safe.

Happy Wednesday, Hyde County!

It seems scam alerts have become a regular part of our week. The Hyde County Sheriff’s Office wants to make you aware of a scam that has recently affected some of our residents, known as a “brushing scam.”

A brushing scam occurs when you receive an unsolicited package in the mail—something you did not order. The package may be empty or contain inexpensive items. In some cases, it may also include a QR code encouraging you to scan it to learn more about the sender.

Do not scan the QR code. Scanning it can allow scammers to access your personal information, which may then be used for fraudulent or other harmful purposes.

If you receive an unexpected package, here’s what to do:

• Do not pay for the merchandise: Do not be swindled or talked into paying for it.
• Return to sender: If the package is unopened and has a return address, mark it “RETURN TO SENDER.” USPS will return it at no charge.
• Throw it away: If opened and you don’t want it, you may safely dispose of it.
• Keep it: If you opened it and want to keep it, you may do so—by law, you are not obligated to pay for unsolicited merchandise.
• Change your passwords: Your personal information may have been compromised.
• Closely monitor accounts: Watch your credit reports and credit/debit card activity.
• Notify authorities: If the package contains seeds, food, plants, liquids, or unknown substances, contact the proper authorities and follow their guidance.
• Be cautious of suspicious contents: If something seems unsafe, follow guidance for handling suspicious mail.
• Notify the retailer: If the package appears to come from a company like Amazon or eBay, report it through their official website and request removal of any fraudulent reviews tied to your name.

Stay alert, Hyde County—and as always, if you have questions or concerns, contact your local law enforcement.

Stay safe!
