Meade County South Dakota
Hello Meade County!
Several law enforcement agencies have been putting up "rules of the road" posts. Thank you for the great safety tips!
Someone reached out to our office and asked if we could provide a message on one issue that seems to be a unique conundrum to our part of the world.... Merging on the Interstate... The rules are clear; the car entering on to the interstate needs to YIELD to the other cars already on the interstate. So, in a nutshell, match speed and find an open space that doesn't cause a crash. Pretty simple right?
Well, here's how people in our neck of the woods make this much more complicated than it needs to be... See, folks around here tend to be very kind and selfless, and as a habit, when we see a vehicle trying to get on the interstate, many of us change lanes into the passing lane and give the merging vehicle the outside lane.
Good decision making, as long as there is ample room to safely change lanes. The end result is everyone makes it to their destination safe and sound, with no need for law enforcement intervention.
Moving over is a courtesy, not a requirement.
The challenge is that all the nice people have trained others to think this will always happen! This creates conflict because the merging drivers then tend to think everyone will always get out of their way, and when someone doesn't move over, likely because they are from another state, or there is not a requirement to do so, feelings tend to get hurt. Unfortunately, when feelings get hurt, words get said, and next thing you know there is a full-blown road rage incident that does require law enforcement intervention.
So, in an effort to make everyone safer, remember this; If you are entering on to the interstate, not a soul driving is required to move over and give you space. If a driver happens to do it out of kindness and courtesy, smile and give a good hand wave, saying thanks. If no one moves over, then match speeds, and find a safe gap in traffic and get into the flow.
Be kind, be safe and most importantly, if you are waving at folks, make sure you use all your fingers.
