The train route used by the 1880 Train has been in place for over 100 years and is a 10-mile stretch that runs through the central part of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Passengers can expect to see scenery like forests, meadows, and creeks, along with wildlife like deer and turkey. The train ride is narrated, and there is also a guide book available for a fee. Over 15 road crossings, each way means plenty of chances to hear the unique and cherished sound of a steam whistle.

Rising above the depot, our water tower is far more than a reminder of the steam era—it’s still an essential part of keeping the 1880 Train moving down the rails today. Both of our depots use their water towers to fill the locomotive with the water needed to power our steam engines, carrying on a tradition of railroading that has remained unchanged for generations.

Here at the 1880 Train, history isn’t sitting still. It’s living, breathing, steaming, and working every single day—where every detail still serves a purpose and every journey is powered by the past.

As one of the proud depots of the 1880 Train, Hill City has long been part of the story we carry along the rails each day. From welcoming passengers at the depot platform to watching the whistle echo through town, this community has remained closely tied to the rhythm of the railroad for generations.
