Family, friends, staff, and community members gathered to celebrate the incredible creativity of the Suffern High School Class of 2026 during the annual Senior Art Showcase held on Wednesday, June 3.

The event featured the portfolios of Advanced Placement Art and Design students, along with works by students nominated by their art teachers, representing the culmination of years of artistic growth and exploration. Many of the featured artists have spent all four years immersed in the SHS art program, developing both their technical skills and their unique creative voices.

More than just an art show, the evening highlighted the courage it takes to share personal stories through art. Each student thoughtfully curated their own display, selected and prepared their pieces, and wrote a personal biography to accompany their work. AP Art students also created digital portfolios that guests could explore through QR codes displayed alongside their exhibits.

Throughout the evening, one message stood out: while technology continues to evolve, the human connections created through art remain irreplaceable. The showcase celebrated not only the finished pieces, but also the friendships, collaboration, perseverance, and self-discovery that happen in the art room every day.

Thank you to our dedicated art department teachers, Mrs. Berges, Mrs. Wickes, Mr. Karen, Mrs. Ross, and Ms. Leisengang! As a special tradition, they presented each senior artist with a sketchbook—a reminder to continue creating, exploring, and expressing themselves long after graduation.

Special shout out to our FACS students and staff for supporting the evening with homemade delicacies that mirrored the art on the walls. Mrs. Schwartz and her students outdid themselves!

Congratulations to our talented senior artists on this remarkable achievement. Your creativity, bravery, and passion have left a lasting mark on the Suffern High School community, and we can’t wait to see where your artistic journeys take you next.

🎨 May Artists of the Month 🎨

Creativity comes in many forms, and this month's celebrated artists have demonstrated not only impressive artistic skills but also the dedication, effort, and positive attitudes that help them grow as young artists.

Juliette H. (Sloatsburg, first grade) created a beautiful flower painting using warm and cool colors. She consistently works hard, takes her time, and makes kind choices in the classroom.

Emma N (Sloatsburg, first grade) approached her warm and cool color flower painting with creativity and attention to detail. She is a patient, thoughtful artist who always gives her best effort.

Ethan K, a fourth grader at Montebello, quickly mastered the cutting techniques used in his project and applied them with precision. His designs are crisp, clean, and expertly crafted.

Suffern High School freshman, Jenny R., demonstrates outstanding dedication to her artwork, often bringing projects home to ensure they are completed to the highest standard.

Cherry Lane fifth-grader, Sage Y., created an impressive pinch pot owl that showcases strong craftsmanship and creativity. Even before its final glazing and firing, the piece stands out as an excellent example of the project.

Jace J., Suffern Middle School 8th grader, has shown exceptional commitment to developing his high-contrast linework and bringing his subjects to life. His skill, focus, and artistic growth make him a standout artist.

Congratulations to all of our May Artists of the Month! Your hard work, creativity, and dedication continue to inspire us.

Suffern Central School District Appoints New Principal for RP Connor Elementary School

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Suffern Central Board of Education appointed Paul Tryon as the next principal of RP Connor Elementary School. Mr. Tryon brings more than 15 years of experience as both an elementary teacher and principal, having worked in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and, most recently, Saugerties, New York.

“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Tryon to Suffern Central,” said Dr. Erik Gundersen, Superintendent of Schools. “After hearing from so many in our community through ThoughtExchange about what they hoped for in their next principal, we’re confident we’ve found an experienced, student-centered leader who is committed to building strong relationships with our families and staff. We look forward to seeing RP Connor thrive under his leadership.”

Mr. Tryon embodies the experience and student-centered leadership the community hoped to find. He has spent the last seven years as an elementary principal, and the nine before that as a teacher and literacy specialist. He places the highest value on helping every child reach their full potential and develop a lifelong love of learning. He is also kind, compassionate, and committed to honoring the traditions and strong sense of community that make RP Connor special, while building on that foundation to create new opportunities for students and staff in the years ahead.

“I’m honored to join the Suffern Central community and RP Connor School,” said Mr. Tryon. “This is a close-knit community with a real sense of pride, and I’m eager to listen, learn, and get to work with the students, staff, and families here.”

Mr. Tryon is married and has a one-year-old son. He loves music and the arts and enjoys spending time in nature in the Hudson Valley. He is passionate about early childhood education and about giving students and teachers the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Mr. Tryon begins on July 15, 2026, and will spend some time at RP Connor before the school year ends. There will be opportunities to meet him throughout the summer, with details to come.

Student learning with a lasting impact!

SHS Italian students in Ms. Crespo’s class partnered with our library information specialist, Mr. Martiniello to create an interactive cultural resource display that brings Italy’s art, history, sports, and travel experiences to life.

After researching and writing original scripts, students used AI responsibly to help produce four professional-quality videos, which can now be accessed through QR codes displayed in the library. The project strengthened research, communication, collaboration, and digital literacy skills while expanding world language resources for our school community.

This is project-based learning at its best. Students creating authentic resources that help others learn, explore, and connect with new cultures.

A colorful and spirited kindergarten show took place today at RP Connor with songs and dance moves that filled the gym with joy!

Thanks to Mrs. Meyer for coordinating the whole show, and to our Kindergarten teachers for helping the students tie dye their shirts for this special day!

Third graders are “rising up” to the challenge of the recorder during this week’s family concert and they succeeded!

Great job by all our performers, Mrs. Ezratty, the teachers and all the staff that helped make today’s show a success.

Education leaders, board members, student representatives, and technology professionals from across Rockland County schools gathered last night for the Rockland County School Boards Association’s (RCSBA) 79th Annual Meeting and Recognition Dinner.

As part of the evening, the RCSBA recognized student board members from each county high school for their leadership and service to their school communities. Representing Suffern were our first, ex officio Board of Education members, and Suffern High School seniors Joy Yin and Robbie Schwartz.

The event also celebrated school IT professionals for their continued work in supporting innovative, accessible technology in schools. Our Chief Technology Officer, Paul Zeller, and Director of Technology, Eric Coronado, were among those honored.

It was a wonderful evening celebrating the collaboration, leadership, and shared commitment that strengthen schools and communities across Rockland County.

Science, sustainability, and service all came together in this hands-on 5th-grade project.

As part of their Living Systems and Ecosystems unit, students in Mrs. Langenmayr’s class have been growing hydroponic lettuce and vegetables while learning about life cycles, environmental responsibility, and sustainable growing practices. From balancing water and nutrients to creating compost and raising compost worms, students have taken ownership of every step of the process.

But the impact goes beyond the classroom. Students recently harvested their lettuce and donated it to the community food pantry, along with handmade notes of care and kindness. Before the end of the year, the plants will be transferred to the school garden to continue the growing cycle.

This project is a powerful example of our Strategic Plan in action — creating authentic, hands-on learning experiences that build critical thinking, environmental stewardship, and community connection.

Way to go 5th graders!
