Friday of EMS Week is reserved for recognizing our providers for the care and service they provide to our community. Tonight, we hosted a cookout for the employees at Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service to thank them for their commitment to our agency and residents. Employees were also given EMS Week gifts from our board of directors.

After dinner, two employees were recognized as the EMT of the Year and the Paramedic of the Year. These awards were voted on by their fellow employees. We are proud to announce Paramedic of the Year, Alex Heyen, and EMT of the Year, Brayden Summers.

We would also like to take this opportunity to recognize Alex and Brayden for recently completing their first EMT class as instructors. They had 10 students complete their class, and at this time, 9 out of 10 students have passed their national certification. This is an extraordinary feat, as this pass rate is far above the national average.

The evening concluded with Alex leading a continuing education class for our employees on heat-related illness and sports injuries.

Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service would like to thank each and every employee who answers the call and helps us serve the communities we serve.

Today we look at children in EMS. The old saying that children are just little adults is very inaccurate. EMS providers are trained in the physical and developmental differences in pediatric patients versus adults. Our pediatric patients require a different set of tools and equipment designed to properly treat them. Our providers also have to take a different approach to patient assessment and interaction with our young patients. We host continuing education for our staff specifically designed toward treating our young patients. Our advanced providers are required to maintain certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) by the American Heart Association.

If you see our crews out around town you can always ask our crews to show your children around the ambulance and let them become more familiar if they need us.

Our providers are ready to treat even the smallest of patient should the need arise.

Today’s theme for EMS week is safety. Our providers are trained that safety is the number one priority of every call. We can not help our patients if we ourselves become a patient.

The safety aspect includes many different things. Scene safety and preventing dangers on calls, whether we are working on a busy roadway or a dangerous scene that needs to be secured safety is always a priority not only for our providers but the safety of our patients and the community.

Safety also include the safety and prevention of workplace injuries through proper practices and equipment. We promote proper lifting to prevent injuries as have advanced equipment to help lift patients and reduce injury risk to our staff and patient. All of our ambulances are equipped with Stryker Power cots to help lift patients and 3 of our 4 ambulance have the Stryker power load system to lift the cot reducing risk of injuries to our staff.

Equipment being in proper working order is another aspect of safety we take seriously. All of our equipment is inspected daily to ensure that when our patients need it, the equipment will be working properly.

Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service is proud to serve our surrounding communities. Each year we take time to celebrate the EMS professionals that serve our residents. Today marks the first day of EMS Week 2026. Today we highlight the health, wellness, and resilience of our providers. Supporting one another to better serve our community.

To promote the health and wellness of our staff, using a safety grant from IPRF, we have purchased and are setting up a gym for our employees.

In April, we hosted nationally recognized speaker Silouan Green for an evening promoting mental fitness and peer connections for first responders in the county.

Tonight is our event. We are excited to host the area first responders who sent in their RSVP. If you did not RSVP and would like to come we still have room, and would welcome you to attend. Join us tonight at Hillsboro High School cafeteria for our keynote speaker. Dinner is provided as well as CEU for EMS providers.

Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Hillsboro Health for inviting our crews to attend an outstanding Pediatric Trauma education class presented by the team from SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

Opportunities like this allow our providers to continue strengthening their knowledge and skills when caring for our youngest and most vulnerable patients. Ongoing education is a vital part of ensuring we provide the highest level of care to the communities we serve.
