On December 10, 1938, West Virginia native Pearl S. Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for her book The Good Earth.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to László Krasznahorkai, a Hungarian novelist, for a body of work that has won widespread acclaim and, according to the Nobel Committee, “is characterized by absurdism and grotesque excess."

Pearl S. Buck was award the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces." She was the first American woman to receive this honor.

The Sydenstricker Cabin at the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace was the setting for a free writing workshop for teens titled "Creative Characters and Conflict for Aspiring Writers" led by playwright and educator Ned Dougherty of Green Bank. Writing workshops and field trips for students during the 2025-26 school year are the focus of our program "Why Pearl Buck Matters" which is funded by a grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.
