The Central County Fire Department CERT Program was recently recognized with the CESA Coastal Chapter Silver Award for our Mandarin Chinese CERT training program and its contributions to strengthening community preparedness and emergency readiness.

Hillsborough CERT Volunteer Coordinator Mike Chuang, Hillsborough CERT Volunteer Instructor and Councilmember Marie Chuang, and CCFD CERT Coordinator Kaz Chiao were honored to accept the award on behalf of the many volunteers, instructors, and community members who have supported this effort.

This quarter’s featured speaker is Joel Laucher from United Policyholders, a national nonprofit organization that helps insurance consumers navigate challenges before and after disasters. The discussion will focus on insurance-related considerations surrounding wildfire preparedness, recovery, coverage challenges, and steps residents can take before and after a disaster.

The Draft Local Hazard Mitigation Plan is now available for public comment!

The San Mateo County Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) is a countywide effort involving 36 jurisdictions and special districts to identify and address risks from natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and severe weather. The plan outlines strategies and actions to reduce disaster impacts before they occur, helping protect people, homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.

🗓️ Public Comment Period: May 15 – June 15, 2026

Community members are encouraged to review the draft plan and share their feedback. Public input helps ensure the plan reflects local experiences and priorities while strengthening San Mateo County’s ability to secure state and federal funding for future hazard mitigation projects.

The HNN Leadership Team had a great time today at the neighborhood block party hosted by the Smith/Tien family on Bluebell. Thank you for organizing such a wonderful gathering that brought together 20+ neighbors for an afternoon of connection and community spirit!

Councilmember Marie Chuang, CCFD CERT Coordinator and Emergency Management Specialist Kaz Chiao, and HNN Leadership Chair/CERT Volunteer Coordinator Mike Chuang shared brief remarks with attendees. Events like this directly support the mission of HNN by strengthening neighborhood connections and helping build a more prepared, resilient community. As Kaz highlighted, studies have shown that neighborhoods with strong social connections are often more resilient following disasters.

The team also shared information on how residents can stay informed during emergencies, along with upcoming preparedness and CERT training opportunities. Thank you again to the Smith/Tien family for helping strengthen neighborhood connections in Hillsborough!

Robust dialogue, hands on training, and strong teamwork all building toward this afternoon’s simulation exercise.
