Hog Day This Saturday

The Annual Hog Day Barbecue festival is this weekend in downtown Hillsborough. The event starts with a concert from 6-10 on Friday night. The concert and barbecue cooking is in the area between East Margarette Lane and the Eno River.
The fun continues starting at 10 am Saturday with all-day concerts, food and craft vendors, and some of the best pork barbecue you can find.

Anyone wishing to attend the festivities is urged to park in the deck next to Weaver Street Market or one of the town lots west of Churton Street. Visitors are urged to leave room for emergency vehicle access when stopping or parking their vehicles on or near streets and parking lot entrances.
Everyone is urged to come out to the festival, but if festivals aren't your thing, then we urge you to come downtown and shop our local stores and eateries.
If none of this interests you, then you may want to avoid downtown as the people and vehicle traffic will be increased during the festival.

Stay safe, and we hope to see you Friday and Saturday in beautiful downtown Hillsborough!

Remembering Assistant Chief Jeff Holden

Remembering "Stan"

This day in 2018 started as usual around the fire station, but ended horribly. What started out as a mutual aid request for rope rescue would end with the loss of one of the greatest people to ever join our department.
In the days, weeks, and months that followed, we cried, searched for why, met many amazing humans, witnessed the support of our amazing town and communities, remembered the fallen, and tried to find a reason to continue responding to calls.

When a person enters the fire service, it's usually because they just want to help others, love the adrenaline rush associated with emergency response, or, in some cases, are just searching for a job. When you are in the fire service and lose part of your family on a call, you find yourself searching for why you really are a firefighter and asking yourself, "Is it worth it?".
Every August 13th, many of us relive that horrible day in 2018, so we offer this advice.

Hug your loved ones and tell them you love them, often.
Tell your friends and family what they mean to you.
Show compassion for strangers in need.
If you have friends or family who are firefighters, work in EMS, or law enforcement, check on them periodically and make sure they know it is worth it and that what they do is important.

Please say a little prayer for peace and continued healing for the family of Chief Holden and his fire families.

We are forever remembering our friend, coach, teacher, and leader, Jeffrey "Stan" Holden. Last alarm August 18, 2018
Gone in body but forever living on in our hearts.

Department Responds to Multiple Water Rescues

TS Chantal brought heavy rains and winds to the district on the evening of July 6th. Many fire departments in the county responded to multiple trees down, flooded vehicles, people trapped by flood waters, downed powerlines and power lines on fire.
In a period of approximately two hours, our personnel handled multiple water rescues, two downed trees, several flooded streets reports and several power line calls. Our boat and two members of our water rescue team were requested to assist with evacuations in Carrboro while one of our units assisted Cedar Grove with another call.
Three people were transported by our units to local businesses and fire stations to be sheltered from the storm.
All totaled, our personnel made a positive impact on approximately 65 people in a short two hour time period.
The Orange County Emergency Communications 911 system were inundated with calls from throughout the county but as always they did an amazing job of balancing the demand and meeting the needs of our community and our emergency response agencies.
Our citizens and visitors are fortunate to have the kind of teamwork and dedication that our fire, EMS, 911 and law enforcement team demonstrate every day.

Department Hosts Blood Drive

Please come by our main station on Friday June 27th between 1pm and 5pm to support the American Red Cross and give the gift of life.
According to the American Red Cross, every 2 seconds in the United States, someone needs blood or platelets. Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day.
A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood.
Your single donation can help save more than one life.

Won't you be a life saver on Friday June 27th by donating some time and a little blood to the American Red Cross?

What better way to spend a Friday afternoon than saving lives and hanging out with firefighters that do it day in and day out. It will be sort of a Life Saving Heros party!
Hope to see everyone on Friday at the Hillsborough Fire Station located at 206 S. Churton Street in beautiful downtown Hillsborough.

After the Blood Drive ends, Last Friday's in Hillsborough begins so come for the blood drive and stay for the Hillsborough Art's Council monthly Last Friday in downtown. There you can see and purchase from local artisans on display, eat at one of the local restaurants or taverns, learn about current events and then stop by The Town Scoop for some amazing ice cream or sweets.

Structure Fire 24 June 2025

At 20:52 hours this evening, B-Shift was dispatched to a report of a commercial structure fire at 2707 NC Highway 86 South in Hillsborough. Engine 234 arrived on scene in less than four minutes and reported smoke and fire conditions from several storage units at the location. After gaining access into the property and forcing entry into the storage units, an aggressive fire attack quickly contained the majority of the fire. Due to the amount of time that the fire had burned unreported, fire had spread to the roof of the structure and was traveling the attic space. Firefighters from New Hope Fire Department trench cut the roof to gain access and to stop the forward spread of the fire while firefighters from Orange Rural, Eno and Orange Grove extinguished fires, pulled ceilings and extinguished smoldering hot spots.
Multiple storage units had to be emptied in order for the firefighters to gain access and extinguish the fires.
Crews were rotated out of the fire scene to rehydrate and cool down due to the high heat index and increased core temperatures associated with wearing the protective clothing firefighters have.
The building was not occupied when firefighters arrived and there were no reports of any injuries.
The cause of the fire has being investigated by the Orange County Fire Marshal with assistance from the City of Mebane Fire Marshal.
