IMPORTANT WEATHER ANNOUNCEMENT:
With the current flooding we are experiencing, there are several locations in our service area where rising floodwaters have come into contact with BPU transformers and other electrical equipment. It is extremely important that you avoid these flooded areas, as the equipment is energized and could potentially cause harm to anyone that comes into contact with the water.
Our crews are responding to locations where this has been reported to attempt to alleviate some of the flooding around equipment where possible.
Please be aware that it is possible that some basements could flood given the amount of water pooling in some locations. Make sure to check your basement frequently. If water in your basement is approaching the height of your wall outlets, you need to shut off power at the breaker and report it to us.
Our emergency line is 1-844-427-8633. Please report all utility-related emergencies to this line, DO NOT call our office. This is the quickest, most efficient way to notify our crews of any issues.

WATER MAIN BREAK UPDATE: We have now closed E Hallett Street between S West Street and S Manning Street to traffic while crews continue to make repairs. Please seek an alternate route.
UPDATE: The original reported location of the water main break was incorrect. We have updated this post with the correct location. We apologize for any confusion.
***
Crews are responding to a water main break on East Hallett Street. Until further notice, please avoid the area of East Hallett Street between South West Street and South Manning Street to give our crews space to work.
We will keep you updated on the status of repairs.
Since Hillsdale County will likely see some severe winter weather Wednesday and Thursday, we want to remind you that if you need to report a power outage or other utility-related emergency you should call our emergency number, 1-844-427-8633, NOT our office line. This will ensure that your outage is known to our electric crews in the field and will be resolved as quickly as possible.
ALERT: A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for our area from 10:00PM Tuesday, Feb. 1, to 8:00PM Thursday, Feb. 3.
Check out this briefing from the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana regarding the winter storm that will affect our area. Initial snow accumulations late Tuesday night through Wednesday night of 6-12 inches with locally higher amounts are possible. Additional heavy snow is possible on Thursday. The combination of heavy snow accumulations and gusty north to northeast winds to 25 to 30 MPH will create very dangerous travel conditions.
BPU personnel will be closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond in the the event of any power outages.
We encourage our customers to pay attention to weather reports. Tune in to WCSR 92.1 FM for local closures and weather information.
Additionally, we recommend reviewing the following protective actions you should take to prepare for a possible #WinterStorm:https://www.ready.gov/sites/default/files/2020-11/winter-storm_information-sheet.pdf

UTILITY WORKER SCAMS
We have received reports that an individual pretending to be a BPU employee has showed up to several homes in Hillsdale this week, asking to view the resident's utility bill to supposedly show them ways they can save on energy costs. This is a scam attempt and we urge our customers to be on guard for scam artists posing as utility workers.
The City of Hillsdale Police Department has been notified and is looking into the matter.
To be clear, BPU employees will never come to your home seeking any personal or financial information, or asking to look at your utility bills. Most visits from BPU workers will be regularly scheduled or requested by the customer. If you believe you have been contacted by a utility worker who may be an imposter, immediately report it to the police and call us at (517) 437-3387.
By working together to alert the community, we can reduce the number of these incidents and keep our community safe.
