Webinar: Wartime Refugee Crisis in the Hudson Valley, 1754-1763
Thursday, June 4, 6-7:30pm via Zoom

Tom Arne Midtrød, Ph.D. will discuss how the outbreak of the Seven Years' War affected Mahican and Munsee-speaking populations in the Hudson Valley. Native groups were forcibly removed and relocated to new areas both inside and outside of the Valley, creating a refugee crisis. This image is of Old Fort Johnson, which was a central location during the refugee crisis. To register, visit the Hudson Area Library's History Room website (link in bio).

The Jacob Leisler Library Lectures are made partially possible through the generous support of the Van D**e Family Foundation, HRBT Foundation, and Bank of Greene County Charitable Foundation. What a special day for the Roe Jan Library community! On May 9, Board President Pat Placona officially cut the ribbon to open the new Charlotte Shutts Pavilion, joined by Assembly Member Didi Barrett, the supervisors of Ancram, Copake, and Hillsdale, along with library staff, trustees, friends, and supporters.

The pavilion was made possible through a generous bequest from Charlotte Shutts, who specifically wished for part of her gift to support the creation of an outdoor gathering space for programs, events, and community celebrations for years to come. We’re deeply grateful to the Friends of the Roe Jan Library for helping furnish the space!

If you haven’t already, make sure to stop by and check out this beautiful new community space!

Did you know that Columbia County runs on some of the kindest volunteers around? Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Volunteer Fair on April 25th!

We were thrilled to welcome more than 15 organizations, including the Columbia Land Conservancy, Columbia County Sanctuary Movement, Camphill Village, Columbia Kitchen, Ancram Center for the Arts, Roe Jan Food Pantry, Harlem Valley Rail Trail, Hillsdale Fire Department, and the Columbia County Office for the Aging, among many others.

These organizations work tirelessly year round to support our communities, and we are so grateful for all they do. Be sure to reach out and learn how you can get involved and support their important work!

Boy, are we lucky to have Nancy Rutter’s work up on our walls through the end of June. Make sure to stop by and experience “Color Fields,” a vibrant exhibition of paintings and pastels inspired by the light and shadows of Columbia County.

We’re also excited to host an Artist’s Reception for Nancy on Saturday, May 16 from 1 to 3pm. All are welcome to stop by, celebrate Nancy and her work, and enjoy an afternoon at the Library.

Nancy Rutter has lived in France and Ireland, where she taught color viscosity printmaking at the Limerick College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and corporate collections across the United States, France, Great Britain, and Bhutan.

Proceeds from artwork sales support the Roeliff Jansen Community Library.
