Federal cuts to school meal programs would affect thousands of Bergen County kids. Today, Rep Josh Gottheimer came to Hillsdale to speak about the Feed Our Kids Act.

The Mayor's Corner (Mayor Sheinfield - Hillsdale, NJ): I’m starting a new way to keep residents of Hillsdale updated on what’s happening in town.

You may have already seen Councilmember Camp - Hillsdale, NJ video updates from recent Council meetings. He’s been doing a great job helping make what happens at Borough Hall more accessible and transparent. If you’re not following him on Instagram, it’s worth checking out.

As mayor, much of the work happens behind the scenes, and it can take months before progress becomes visible. From time to time, I’ll share updates on key issues so you know what’s in motion.

Here are a few quick updates:

Cell Service (East Side)

While the cell tower proposal did not pass last week, I’m continuing to work on solutions to improve coverage on the east side of town. I’ve already begun meeting with stakeholders to explore alternative approaches. I’m not able to share details just yet, but I want residents to know this remains a priority.

Train Station Roof

On Friday, I met with NJ Transit at the train station regarding the long-standing roof issue. Here’s a photo of what’s on the top floor-a model train set that many residents may not even realize is there. I hope everyone will have the chance to go up and see it, but that won’t be possible until we address the roof. After two years of work on this, we’re getting close to a resolution. I expect to have more concrete updates within the next couple of weeks.

Alexander’s Dry Cleaners Site

The DEP cleanup of the former Alexander’s Dry Cleaners site at Orchard and Broadway is finally complete. The property is now for sale and ready for redevelopment, creating an opportunity for a new local business in that location.

As always, I welcome your questions and feedback.

Mayor Michael Sheinfield

Update: Hillsdale's East Side Cell Coverage Vote

On April 14th, the Borough Council voted 4–2 to reject a proposed cell tower lease with Verizon at Stonybrook Swim Club.

After more than a year of research, a cellular expert evaluated six potential sites. Five were ruled out — blocked by Open Space rules, declined by the Board of Education, structurally unworkable, or privately owned. Stonybrook was the last viable option identified.
The east side coverage gap affects residents, students, and first responders. As Mayor Sheinfield put it: "Cell service is not a 'nice to have' — it is a vital lifeline."

The vote is done. The problem isn't.

We encourage every Hillsdale resident to stay engaged — reach out to your council members, and ask every November candidate where they stand on solving east side cell coverage.

Hillsdale deserves thoughtful, community-focused leadership.

In a recent Letter to the Editor to Pascack Press, Dena Martini Toms shares why she’s running for Borough Council and the values driving her decision to step up and serve.

From strengthening our downtown to addressing real infrastructure needs like cell service, her focus is on practical solutions that benefit the entire community.

Mark your calendars for next months cell tower town hall.

Jan 20, 7p-9p at Borough Hall

As many residents know, the Borough is continuing discussions around the proposed cell tower on the Stonybrook Swim Club property.

I ran for council believing that improved cell service and modern infrastructure are important for public safety, reliability, and the long term needs of our community. Based on the information available to date, I plan to support moving this project forward.

That said, I also believe strongly that residents deserve clear information and the opportunity to ask questions directly. That’s why I encourage anyone with questions or concerns to attend the upcoming town hall. This will be a chance to hear from professionals, understand the technical details, and listen to perspectives from the Mayor and Council.

Regardless of where you stand, your participation matters. I hope to see many neighbors there and look forward to a respectful, informative conversation. Feel free to share this post!
