Hillsdale Township Fire Department

Hillsdale Township Fire Department Providing 24/7 fire coverage to the residents and businesses of Hillsdale and Cambria Townships.
(1)

Hillsdale Rural Fire Department has been providing fire protection to the residents of Hillsdale and Cambria Townships since 1946. We first started running out of a station garage next to Stocks Mill in the city of Hillsdale in 1946, in what is now the Hillsdale County Sheriff Maintenance Garage. In 1994 we started running out of our current location at 2323 West Bacon Road about 1 mile West of th

e city limits. In 2014, members of the Hillsdale Rural Fire Association voted to disband the association and the fire department, and allow Hillsdale Township to assume all responsibilities and ownership of assets, equipment, and trucks. As of 2015, the department began operating as Hillsdale Township Fire Department. We are an organized, paid volunteer department with strong working relationships with several surrounding departments. One of Hillsdale Countys 14 fire departments, HTFD serves about 8,000 people in Hillsdale and the Northern 1/3 of Cambria Township with Reading Fire Department covering the other 2/3. We run 6 trucks out of our station including 2 water tankers, 2 pumpers, and 2 brush trucks. HTFD will respond to any request for mutual aid by any fire department in the county and surrounding area. HTFD obtained the first set of JAWS OF LIFE in Hillsdale County running as the Hillsdale County Rescue Squad until the mid 1990's. Fire department operations are governed through a Fire Board of Directors, made of representatives of Hillsdale and Cambria Townships. Cambria Township pays a set yearly fee for fire coverage to Hillsdale Township and Reading Fire Departments.

🚒📚 HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! 🚌✏️

From all of us at the Hillsdale Township Fire Department, we want to wish every student, teacher, bus driver, and school staff member a safe, successful, and awesome first day back!

A couple quick reminders:

🚌 Watch for school buses and flashing lights. Those big yellow things carrying tiny humans are pretty hard to miss.

🚸 Slow down in school zones. That extra 30 seconds isn’t going to ruin your day. A speeding ticket might.

👀 Keep an eye out for kids walking and biking. Some of them are excited. Some are half asleep. Some are fueled entirely by Pop-Tarts. Expect anything.

And finally…

👏 A HUGE shoutout to the parents.

You survived summer vacation.

You survived the constant snacks.

You survived hearing “I’m bored” approximately 47,826 times.

You survived the school-supply aisle, back-to-school clothes shopping, schedule changes, sports practices, and trying to remember which kid needed the 1-inch binder and which one needed the 2-inch binder.

And this morning, you somehow got everybody dressed, fed, photographed on the front porch with a sign, and out the door.

We salute you. 🫡

Now go enjoy that first peaceful cup of coffee while it’s still hot.

Because they’ll be home again before you know it. 😂

Have a HAPPY & SAFE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! 🚒❤️📚

And remember: slow down, pay attention, and help us keep those kiddos safe.

🚒 Public Service Announcement (Because We Knew This Was Coming…) 🚒

Yes… we know it smells like smoke.

Yes… we smell it too.

No… your neighbor’s house is probably not on fire.

Your neighbor is probably burning something—brush, burgers, hot dogs, or whatever questionable weekend project they’ve convinced themselves is a good idea—but they’re not responsible for the smoky haze covering the entire area.

The smoke you’re seeing and smelling has drifted into our region from the Canadian wildfires.

If you don’t see flames or a specific column of smoke coming from one location, there’s no need to call 911 to report that “it smells smoky outside.”

If you do see flames, a structure fire, vehicle fire, or smoke coming from a specific location, absolutely give us a call. That’s what we’re here for.

In the meantime, keep our Canadian neighbors in your thoughts and say a prayer for the firefighters, families, and communities dealing with these devastating wildfires. What we’re experiencing is just an inconvenience—their reality is far more difficult.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and maybe don’t take the deepest breath you’ve ever taken today.
