**Press Release**

On August 31, 2026, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received information that a victim had arrived at Lewis Gale Hospital in Pulaski, Virginia, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and patrol deputies responded and began an investigation. As a result of the investigation, a warrant was issued for Arless Dalton Jr. for Malicious Wounding.

Mr. Dalton was located in Dublin, Virginia, and is currently in custody. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office believes this to be an isolated incident.

Mr. Dalton is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Virginia State Police, Pulaski Police Department, and Dublin Police Department for their assistance.

Due to the sensitive nature of this case, no further names or information will be released at this time.

Today, we mourn the passing of Sheriff Steve Draper of the City of Martinsville.

Sheriff Draper served as Sheriff since 1994, giving more than 30 years of his life to serving the citizens of Martinsville and the law enforcement profession.

As a fellow Virginia Sheriff and colleague, my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, the men and women of the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office, and the entire Martinsville community during this difficult time.

Sheriff Draper dedicated his life to serving his community, and his many years of service will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Sheriff Draper. Thank you for your service.

Congratulations to Carroll County's Laiken Burnett, recipient of a 2026-27 Virginia Sheriffs' Institute Scholarship. Carroll County Sheriff's Office Kevin Kemp recently presented Laiken with her $1,000 scholarship as she prepares to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Today, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office joins the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office in mourning the heartbreaking loss of Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III, who gave his life in the line of duty while faithfully serving his community.

On behalf of the men and women of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences to Sheriff Robert Richardson, Deputy Duvall’s wife and children, his family, friends, and every member of the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Richardson is not only a respected colleague, but a friend, and our hearts are with him and his agency during this incredibly difficult time.

Every law enforcement officer understands the risks that come with wearing the badge, but that knowledge never makes the loss of one of our own any easier. Deputy Duvall answered the call to serve with courage and made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. His service and dedication will never be forgotten.

Please join us in keeping the Duvall family, Sheriff Richardson, and the entire Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks ahead.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office is currently attempting to locate Julian Pierce, 61 years old, who was reported missing today.

Julian was last seen in the Fries/Ivanhoe area last night driving a 2011 maroon Ford Escape.

• Blue eyes
• Gray hair

Congratulations to Laiken Burnett on being selected as the recipient of the 2026-2027 Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Scholarship Award!

Sheriff Kevin Kemp was honored to present Laiken with this $1,000 scholarship at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, August 5. Laiken plans to continue her education while pursuing a career in law enforcement.

It was a great opportunity to connect with our community, meet families, and help students get ready for a successful school year. We appreciate everyone who came out to support the event and helped make it such a great success.
