🚨🚨🚨Important PSA 🚨🚨🚨
The kittens are here! And so are goopy eyes. Mild watery, squinty, runny, or crusty eyes can quickly become an emergency. Sticky or crusty discharge from an eye infection can seal the eye closed, which allows the infection to take over, causing severe pain and permanent damage if not resolved quickly.
If you have a kitten with eye issues, even if mild, it’s important to act quickly and stay on top of it. Begin by gently cleaning the eyes with a warm, moist cloth several times a day to loosen any built-up crusts and keep the eyes open. This can provide temporary relief and help keep the eye from closing completely, which can result in painful and devastating consequences, including permanent scarring and blindness. But you will still need to provide treatment if infection has set in.
It is best to seek immediate help from your veterinarian once your kitten develops an eye infection. Over the counter pet eye ointments can be purchased at local retail stores like Tractor Supply, Walmart, or Amazon (NEVER use Neosporin or other products not approved for ophthalmic use in cats as they can cause severe damage!!!). These may help keep the eye open and prevent additional damage while the eye heals in self-limiting cases; however, if the infection becomes severe, prescription medicine or additional veterinary treatment will likely be required. It’s important to act quickly to save the eye!
