From Fellowship to Service
Rotary may have begun in 1905 as a way for professionals to build friendships—but it didn’t take long for those friendships to turn into something more.
In 1907, the Rotary Club of Chicago took on one of its first public service projects: advocating for public restrooms in downtown Chicago.
It was a simple idea with a much bigger meaning: Rotarians working together to make their community better.
That spirit of service continued to grow and ultimately became the foundation of Rotary as we know it today.
More than a century later, Rotarians around the world—and right here on Hilton Head Island—are still asking the same question:
How can we work together to make a difference?
That’s the heart of Service Above Self. 💙

Today’s meeting was filled with inspiration as we welcomed District Governor Herman Dixon. He reminded us of the core mission of Rotary with a powerful message: “The greatest investment we can make is an investment in people.”

Honors & Achievements

Club Excellence Award: Congratulations to Terri Brashears for leading our club to this recognition during her term as president!

Paul Harris Fellows: Congratulations to Lisa Laudermilch, Steve Steele, and Bonnie Brill on receiving their Paul Harris Fellow recognitions, presented by DG Herman Dixon and Michael Giovannini.

Rotary Spirit Recognition: A special shoutout to Scott Hamlin for being recognized by DG Dixon for truly exemplifying the spirit of Rotary.

District Goals & Priorities DG Dixon outlined key initiatives for the coming year, including supporting Sleep in Heavenly Peace (building beds for children in need) and expanding Rotaract Clubs across our district.

He challenged each of us to live by three principles:

Participate: Deeper involvement creates a richer Rotary experience.

Speak Up: Every member’s voice matters.

Live the Rotary Lifestyle: Put the Four-Way Test into action daily.

His vision for our club is simple yet compelling: make every member feel valued, keep our service visible, welcome guests like family, keep Rotary fun, and build a culture everyone wants to be part of.

Thank you, District Governor Dixon, for your leadership and encouragement as we launch into an exciting year ahead!

🌟 District Governor Herman Dixon Visits Our Club

We were honored to welcome Herman Dixon, Rotary District 7770 Governor, following a joint club reception held August 25 in Bluffton.

DG Dixon shared updates from Rotary International and District 7770, along with his team’s vision and priorities for the 2026–27 Rotary year.

He also encouraged Rotarians to attend the District 7770 Conference on April 10 in Summerville, SC. This year’s new one-day format is designed to make the conference more affordable and accessible, while still offering a full day of Rotary programming, fellowship, and activities.

Did you know Rotary started with just four people?

On February 23, 1905, attorney Paul Harris gathered with three other professionals in Chicago with a simple idea: create a place where people from different professions could build friendships and exchange ideas.

They began rotating their meetings among their offices—which inspired the name “Rotary.”

What started with four people would eventually grow into a worldwide organization dedicated to fellowship, service, and creating lasting change.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to take you through Rotary’s story—from that first meeting in Chicago to the work Rotarians are doing around the world and right here on Hilton Head Island today.

💧 Music, water & community at Rotary!

This week, Rotarian Michael Murphy shared his love of music and memories of Woodstock — a fun way to learn more about one of our own! 🎶

We then welcomed Michael Marks and Pete Nardi of Hilton Head PSD, who gave us an eye-opening look at how our island's water is managed and protected for the future.

A few takeaways: Hilton Head PSD maintains 220 miles of water mains, recycles nearly 1 BILLION gallons of wastewater each year, and continues to invest in protecting our water supply as the island grows. We also learned about Project SAFE which has helped connect approximately 275 homes to public sanitation.

A great reminder of how much goes on behind the scenes to keep Hilton Head thriving! 🌴💧

A great Rotary meeting on July 30!

We were honored to welcome Dr. Heather Hinshelwood as our first new member of the Rotary year! PDG Bernie Riedel did the honors of officially inducting Dr. Hinshelwood into the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club. Welcome to the Rotary family! 💙💛

Our speaker, Aaron Falk, the new CEO of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, shared some of his background and, more importantly, the critical role the Foundation plays in strengthening and supporting our Lowcountry community.

New members, strong community partnerships, and people committed to making a difference—that’s Rotary in action!
