Why do archaeologist at Historic Mitchelville find artifacts from the Enslavement era? There a few different reasons- the area that is now the Park was once plantation land so they are from the enslaved folks who worked that plantation. They could also be from Mitchelville folks who were using things that had been made earlier that they brought with them or found on the abandoned plantations. What other reasons can you think of?

In 2018, archaeology students began the work of located the first Church or Praise House built in Old Mitchelville. New Director Ahmad Ward, Dr. Matthew Sanger and Katherine Seeber began building a program of community-based archaeology from the very beginning. Follow along to see what these first explorations into the soils found!
