Under new leadership in Long Term Care (Binu Polakkatil, Chief RN) and Serenity Place: CLC 2B – Inpatient Hospice (Suja Stanly, CNM) the tradition continues. Started in 2016, by Laura Hoefling, Zoe Palisoc and the night shift nursing staff in CLC 2B/C, this very special and poignant program gives us the chance to reminisce and honor the brave “Angels” who served our Nation. We are forever grateful for their service and humbled by their choice to stay with us in CLC2B during their last days on earth. Each veteran’s name, date of birth and date of death are written on the back of each Angel ornament. During the year, the nurses in Serenity Place keep a log of the hospice patients. After Thanksgiving, the tree is set up and decorated with the angel ornaments. A photo is then taken to commemorate the year’s tree. After January 1, the photo and “Angel” are sent to the Veteran’s next of kin as keepsake and expression of the honor we feel in providing care for their loved one.

What a year it has been! Hines VA administered its first COVID-19 vaccine on Dec. 15, 2020. A lot has changed in one year, but COVID remains a serious concern to our nation. One thing for sure is that vaccination and boosters remain a safe and effective way of fighting COVID. We strongly recommend that everyone receive a COVID-19 vaccine and booster. To make an appointment, please call 708-202-7000. Also, if you have a friend or family member who isn't vaccinated, encourage them to speak to their primary care provider. We can only beat this pandemic together! #HinesIsHere
